The technological level was sort of mixed up. Some things were very advanced. Others less so. This was because when things had hit the fan, there hadn't been much time.

Humanity had hit a developmental wall in the year 2014. Births had tapered off to nothing.

Eventually the reason was found, a virus that had struck in the early part of the preceding century had significantly altered the human genome. It was just that the accumulation of damage had taken a few generations to make itself felt. With human women now sterile, the human race seemed doomed.

Bioengineering by the GEHERN multinational group came up with a solution. The United Nations seized control and developed NERV, which produced the Recombinant Instrumentality Biosystem under Doctor Eurial Addam. Addam's RIB produced the Sons Of Man project.

The result was that while humanity was dying off, humanity had developed its own inheritors using a combination of technologies barely understood by many of those involved.

There had been a single generation with humanity trying to pass on their legacy, with other groups of humanity deciding that this wasn't acceptable and either trying to blockade things or outright destroy them.

It was now one hundred and fifty years later. 2164 by some old calendars, with some technology falling into disrepair, and other technologies maintained quite well.
