After a while, Nabiki quietly excused herself from the group, and headed to where her phone call wouldn’t be overheard.
*Ring.* This time, Setsuna didn’t mind the fact that the call was unannounced one bit.
“Hello?”
“Yes, is this Setsuna Meyers?”
Setsuna’s grin became a glare. “It’s Meioh.”
“Sorry about that. Ms. Mayo, I’m calling on behalf of the Hypercorp Credit Card Company—”
Setsuna “Mayo” slammed the receiver back down as hard as she could. “One of these days, I’ll figure out how those people avoid my precognition.” She did not want to tie up her phone line with some pushy telemarketer.
*Ring.*
“Hello?”
“Sorry about that, Ms. Maya, the reception must have cut out on us.”
“I’m not on a cell phone.”
“But you could get a cell phone with the ¥500,000 line of credit we’re prepared to off—”
*Slam!*
Nabiki wrinkled her brow in consternation. She’d been trying to contact Setsuna for the last ten minutes, but each time, the line had been busy. What could possibly be hogging the line like that? She had to reach her soon—any longer and her absence would start to look conspicuous.
She decided to try one more time, and to her relief, she finally got through.
“Setsuna? It’s N—”
“Goddamn it, I do not need your fucking credit cards!”
Nabiki switched the headset to her still-functional ear before responding. “Well, how about a certain pigtailed martial artist?”
“Is that you, Nabiki?”
“Of course it’s me. I was going to ask what kept you busy, but from your reaction, I’m guessing you were pre-qualified for a zinc rewards card from Hypercorp.”
“The molybdenum card, actually.”
“Close enough. By the way, if I need a hearing aid after this, it’s going on your next bill.”
“Too bad I don’t have a rewards card.” There was light laughter at this. “Anyway, Ranma’s here. You coming over?”
“I’ll be right there.”
“Good. See you in ten seconds.”
“See you.”
Setsuna transformed into Pluto to facilitate her teleport to the Tendo compound. She was just about to leave, when the phone rang again. Scowling, she answered.
“Ms. Meltzner? I’m from the Hyperc—”
“Dead scream.”
Pluto put away her Garnet Rod, made a note to get in touch with a contractor to fix the gaping hole in wall (Nabiki knew where it get a good deal), and teleported to meet her husband.
Nabiki hung up the phone. That went well. Though I still feel like I forgot to tell her something… She’d almost come into view of her family when it hit her. The engagement! But it was too late to do anything, as a knock on the door heralded the arrival of the Senshi of Time.
