EvaPet: Goin' Down To New Moulins [Episode 153979]

by Kestral

At a mere 20mph, it would have been easy to outrace Chimera's approach. Since this was post Second Impact, there was even a high speed rail service that would have performed quite well at evacuating the city. All the people would have to do was follow the instructions and only pack essentials and leave in an orderly fashion.

Alas, that didn't happen.

What did happen was that the bulk of the city lined the areas where Chimera was approaching, hoping to catch a glimpse of this 'angel' as it approached. Then, if it really was coming, they'd just leave then. Crowds formed.

Some people DID leave and DID go in an orderly fashion and DID just pack what they considered essential. Those who did so watched everything going on from television sets later.

Then there was the crowd behind Andre Sottise, whose aging pickup truck had last seen service in 1995. Considering that this was 2015, it was a little overdue. Overloaded with hastily stacked boxes and parcels and bags, he was puttering along the freeway at 11mph when his pickup truck decided it wasn't going any further without a new alternator.

In trying to get around the vehicle which had come to a stop and scattered boxes on the freeway, Philipe Chasse the delivery driver for a cheese company managed to slam directly into Jeanne Colere's Citroen.

Two more wrecks quickly developed while people gawked at the spectacle, essentially blocking off the major path out of Moulins that would lead directly away from the city.

The crowds saw Chimera approaching just as they'd been told. They raced to their vehicles and prepared to leave at high speeds. Unfortunately, due to numbers and the aforementioned accidents - the roads were not currently moving.

The train left, with people packed in tightly and others hanging on outside the train, and still others trying to chase it down the track as Chimera approached.

If Chimera had an opinion on any of this, it wasn't saying.

As it finally passed over the city, to the TV cameras it seemed that a gentle rain was falling in its wake.

The really big bird was moving much faster than Chimera. It was roughly three times the size of a human being, which was still huge considering the size of its components.

It flew, travelling at a little over 200mph, and it was considered much more alarming than Chimera. Both because of speed, and because of direction. It was heading for the biggest population center in France.

The jets intercepting it managed to get it directly with a salvo of missiles, and everyone congratulated themselves when the big bird exploded into lots of little pieces.

Had they realized that those little pieces had formed into little birdies and gone off to infect other little birdies, they might have been less satisfied with those results.

Unfortunately, Paris had a lot of pigeons.

Also unfortunately, one of the little birdies was eaten by a cat. This was immediately unfortunate for the bird, but also very unfortunate for the cat.

"So we're WHAT?" asked Shinji, staring at the monitor.

"Going to be sharing quarters here for some time, apparently," mused Ritsuko. "At least they're bringing supplies in."

"Contain the infection my butt," complained Misato.

"Well, we'll just have to make the best of a bad situation," counseled Maya.

"No beer?!" complained Misato.

"You'd just rust," said Ritsuko.

Misato sulked.
