Having translated parts of his guidebook, and working on the remainder, Ami was next. She occasionally glanced up, checked her compass, and looked at the map.
Just behind her and to either side, Rei and Makoto kept Ami from walking into trees or off cliffs.
Behind them came the National Geographic crew. After that was the oxcart with the tourists and supplies. The ox, if he had any comments on all this, kept any comments to himself.
Keeping the ox on the path were Minako and Usagi. As the ox wasn't inclined to walk into trees or off cliffs, they had an easy time of it.
There were large sections of China where no neogirls had been seen, and females of a humanoid type had been unknown since the Plague had rolled through.
Since that had been 1982-1984, it was now 1992. Eight years since the vast majority of their women had been killed and the remainder rounded up 'for their continued safety'. Eight years since their women had vanished, and due to the closed borders, neogirls hadn't been seen that often.
Which was one reason Ranma circled the area with two of the National Geographic crew who were combat veterans.
The genetic acceleration process had been working since 1985, though it hadn't been "perfected" until 1989. There were a number of young versions of the various girls who had been decanted prior to the accelerated maturation development found in the world outside.
So why had China kept their borders closed? Oh, you could get in easily enough. Just flash some cash and find a few officials to bribe. Get papers saying you were:
A) martial artists here to train as part of the Cultural Exchange Program of 1987. (Ranma, Genma, and Ranma's neogirls.)
B) archaeologists here to prove that China had invented something prior to the European development. (That was the cover of the National Geographic team, checking into salt refining processes.)
C) those of Chinese descent, or suspected Chinese descent, visiting their homeland. (Official cover of the tour group.)
However, as they approached the Bayankala mountain range, it became obvious that something was different about the area.
