"I was," the nurse confirmed. "Or at least you. You were the one who brought in that injured trainer, weren't you?"
"That's right. What did you have to tell me?"
"Only that she's awake," she told him simply.
"Oh? Is that it?"
"Don't you care? I would have thought so, since you helped to bring her to where she could be treated...."
"I do! I do!" Ash replied, waving his hands to stave off any thought of him being callous. "It's just that I didn't expect you to tell me."
"You didn't?"
"Well... yeah. Either people forget to tell me things, or don't think that I need to know. And when they do tell me things, it's usually because I'm in trouble."
"Does that happen a lot with you?" Brock asked.
"Seems that way sometimes. But hearing about her being well is a good thing."
"I would think so too."
"But if you weren't thinking that you'd be informed about her waking up, then what would you do about letting her know what happened?" the nurse asked.
"Nothing, really. The way that I figured it, I'd just head off, with her being in good hands and all. It's not like I'm looking for an award or something like that. I did what I did because it was right."
"I see...."
"Good. But still, it's nice to hear that she's awake."
"Why don't you see that for yourself?"
"Huh?"
The nurse gave him a small smile. "Why don't you go to her room, and see how she's doing for yourself."
"Can I?"
"I don't see why not."
"Then maybe I will."
"I think that's a good idea," she answered, and gave him directions to the room in question.
"I'll go with you," Brock said. "This way, I can see how she is too."
"If you want to, that's fine by me," Ash responded, and led the way along the path that he'd been directed on. He managed to go without any problems, and swallowed hard when he got to the door. It wasn't that he was afraid, but he did know that this wasn't exactly a simple situation to be in, as she likely wouldn't have known anything about what had gone on. But he hoped for the best, and knocked on the door.
"Come in!" called out a feminine voice from behind the door.
Opening the door, Ash stepped inside, and looked over at the figure on the bed. There was a moment when he almost didn't recognize her as the same girl that he'd saved in the forest, but with a little concentration, he was able to see where she'd been cleaned and patched up. Then, as he moved his attention back into the present, he started to see what had been hidden by the state that she had been in. Now that she wasn't in that sort of situation, he could tell that his initial impression of her being a pretty girl was right on.
