Ash wouldn't have known the girl, and so wouldn't have anything to expect out of the person sitting up in the bed.
Ranma, on the other hand, got his first good look at the girl and wanted to run screaming in the opposite direction. Her hair was not in the familiar side-ponytail, she had no makeup, and she had a bandage covering one eye. Yet with her eyes open the picture immediately klicked.
This was Kodachi Kuno, aka the Black Rose.
"I'm told it is you I have to thank for saving me," said the woman, smiling and inclining her head. "I am quite grateful."
"Ah, don't mention it," said Ash, hoping she wouldn't recognize him somehow.
"What were you doing out there like that?" asked Brock.
"I'm a specialist in plant-type pokegirls, and a botanist," said the girl, "I was attempting to research a sighting of a flower-type pokegirl spotted in between Viridian and Pallet."
"Well, I'm Brock. I'm a pokegirl researcher myself. This here is Ash, he's a trainer."
Ash tipped his cap.
"Ah," said the girl. "Thank you again, Ash. My name is Tanto Noshinobi."
"THE Tanto Noshinobi?" asked Brock.
"You've heard of me?" the girl seemed a little surprised and... disappointed?
"Who hasn't?" asked Brock.
"apparently not many," said Tanto in a soft voice.
Ash/Ranma blinked. He hadn't been mistaken. "I haven't."
Tanto blinked and searched his face.
"You were the star of the gymnastics world last year, everyone expected such great things from you," said Brock, not noticing. "Then you suddenly dropped out without a word."
"Well, that's enough reminiscing of old times," said Tanto, "besides, I tire easily. I hope to see you both later."
"Mone! Mone! Monene!"
Watching some guy go by with yet another weird pokegirl, Ash reflected that he shouldn't have expected anything to be like he remembered it.
He threw a pebble along the walkway, hearing it skitter against some object, when he glanced up and saw-
