The sky above poured rain from dark clouds, as though reflecting the black-clothed assemblage of shinobi below. Jack stood at attention next to a ninja named Iruka, a tanned man with a large scar across his nose. The entire atmosphere was solemn, and stressed to Jack just how beloved this man must have been.
Feels like Fraiser's funeral, he thought absently, standing at attention in his dress blues. Nearby, a blond, heavily-bandaged boy, no more than twelve or thirteen, spoke up.
"Iruka-sensei... Why do people risk their lives for others?"
The teacher (as Jack had worked out) sighed thoughtfully.
"When a person dies, he disappears...along with his past, current lifestyle, and his future. Many people die in missions and wars. They die easily and in surprisingly simple ways. Hayate was one of them. Those who die have goals and dreams, but everyone has something as important as those. Parents, siblings, friends, lovers...people who are important to you. They trust and help each other. The bond between the people important to you ever since birth. And the sting that binds them becomes thicker and stronger as time goes by. It's beyond reason. Those bound to you by that string will do that...because it's important..."
Jack smiled, just a little, as the blond kid frowned.
"I think I understand... it just hurts so much..."
"That's why people fight for those they love... To avoid feeling that pain," Iruka concluded with a sad smile. Jack nodded to himself and smiled a little too, before joining the other mourners in putting a flower on the casket of the Third Hokage.
