Ranma had been on Makoto’s mind since she’d met him the previous night. He even looked like her old sempai… no, seriously, he really did look like him. Sort of. Maybe she and Ranma could spar… but then if Ranma really had been training in the martial arts as extensively as he’d said, any “sparring” would be so one-sided that neither of them would benefit. Hmm… I think he said he was the heir to his family’s style… if I can’t be his peer, perhaps he’d be willing to have me as a student… Visions of a shirtless, sweat-slicked Ranma punching and kicking swirled through her head, and then— ACK! Bad Makoto! That’s Setsuna’s husband—he’s taken!
Makoto stopped her workout to shake the nasty, potentially marriage-wrecking thoughts from her head. She sighed; it seemed like every cute guy she met was either a) taken, b) gay, c) evil, or d) all of the above. She idly wondered if she’d ever find Mr. Right—hell, she was willing to settle for a Mr. Decent. To catch someone like Ranma Meioh seemed so unlikely that she hardly dared to entertain the thought… Well, actually, that wasn’t true. Makoto was entertaining that thought all the time—it’s just that she rarely had a face and a name to go with the fantasy. She once again felt the desire to get to know Ranma better—after all, there had to be other, equally cute and totally available guys in the circles he traveled in… perhaps he could introduce her to one of his (male) friends…
Plus, you never knew what you might pick up in conversation, especially over good food, of which she planned to make quite a bit for him—because she wanted to be his friend, that’s all—and quite frankly, it would be nice to be the one withholding information from Setsuna for a change.
She was still musing about all of this when her communicator sounded.
“Makoto, are you there?”
“Yeah, Ami, I’m here. Is something wrong?”
“Not yet—and I’m hoping to keep it that way.”
A bleary eyed moon princess stared over her breakfast at the cat on the other side of the table. “Luna, why are you so obsessed with this? Don’t you trust Setsuna’s judgment?”
“Of course I do… because she usually has all of the relevant information. However, she admits that basically the only things she knows about Ranma are what she’s seen in person and what he’s told her about himself. I’m not saying he’s lying, I just think that a little… cautiousness is in order.”
“Luna…”
“Usagi, the Mau did not become the premier advisors in the Silver Millennium by immediately accepting every bit of information that came across their way—we always try and double-check everything we can, because one simply can’t give good advice with faulty or incomplete information. Now, if you expect me to be a good advisor, you have to let me do my job.”
“But why do we have to go to Setsuna’s this morning?”
“Because they’ll probably be leaving on a honeymoon today—and I want this done as soon as possible. If something is wrong, then our security could be compromised.”
“Uh huh. Well, I think you just want to know what it’s like to be giving Setsuna information instead of just getting it like you usually do.”
“Usagi, with all due respect, that is the most ludicrous suggestion I’ve ever heard.” Fortunately for Luna, her black fur disguised her heavy blushing quite nicely. She was about to continue, when the Princess’s communicator came to life.
“Usagi, are you there?”
“I’m here, Ami.”
“Is Luna with you?”
The blonde teenager (who hadn’t yet had time to put up her extensive locks into their distinctive double ponytail) screwed up her face at this—it wasn’t often that one of the other called specifically for Luna, after all. “Um… yeah, she’s here…”
The relief on the on the other end of the conversation was obvious. “Thank goodness. Look, I’ve found something out about Ranma, and I need you to go to the shrine for a meeting—and make sure that Luna comes with you.”
“Um… alright.”
“Okay. See you there.”
Usagi shut off her communicator and looked over at her advisor. “Well, I guess you’ll have to see Ranma another time.”
“Usagi…”
“Don’t make me use my Serenity voice, Luna. I’m not asking you to come to the meeting, I’m ordering you to as your princess. Ami wouldn’t specifically ask you to be there unless she had a good reason.”
The black mooncat sighed. “Yes, your Highness.”
“Good. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to get ready.”
Ami sighed again; she figured that the Outers wouldn’t have any problems for a while, since they didn’t have any cats, nor were there many strays in their neighborhood. That left one person to contact. She picked up her communicator again. “Minako, are you there?”
