They just didn't know that none of those she was meeting was old enough to drive.
But there was a male voice that she didn't politely ignore, and she smiled when she turned to face Shinji. "Misato!"
"Hiya guys. All ready for dinner?" the major asked him, and the others with him.
"Of course."
"We would have been here even earlier, but this idiot took his time in telling us about your offer," Asuka grumbled, looking rather annoyed at the former pilot of Unit-01. "It took some time to finally get it out of him."
Misato shrugged back at her. "Hey, at least you got here."
"Yeah. Finally."
"Don't worry about it. At least you all are here. Right?"
"Absolutely. Though it is really nice of you to treat all of us."
"Thank you for inviting us," Hikari told her, and bowed slightly. "I hope that this won't be troubling you."
"Actually, I wanted you all here," the older woman told her.
"You did?"
"Well, considering the fact that you've taken in Asuka when I haven't been able to...."
"It was no bother at all! Asuka is my friend, and my family likes having her stay with us."
"And I'd like it if you have dinner with us."
"Thank you, we all will be enjoying this time. Right, you two?" the class representative said, giving an arch look to the other two males of the group.
Kensuke blinked at her. "You've got to be kidding! As soon as we knew that Misato wanted us to come, we wanted to run here straight away!"
"The chance to eat along side Misato? It is like being offered a glimpse into heaven," Toji sighed... only to yelp as Hikari smacked him in the back of the head. "What was that for?"
"Be polite!" Hikari grumbled.
"Perverts," Asuka seconded.
"Come on now...." Shinji murmured. "They aren't so bad...."
The redhead grabbed Shinji by the ear and tugged lightly. "I keep telling you, if you keep thinking like that, you're going to wind up as idiotic as these two. And if you do wind up going in that direction, I won't be happy. Understand?"
"Yeah. Ow.... Ow...."
"Good," the former pilot of Unit-02 said, and let go of him.
"Poor Shinji. Getting henpecked by the devil girl...." Toji softly bemoaned.
"Did you say something, stupid?"
"No, ma'am!"
"Still, there has to be a reason that Misato wanted to do this," Kensuke suggested.
"Well, certainly there is! Right, Misato?"
The major left her observation of Shinji and Asuka's interactions, and grinned broadly. "Yup! A celebration!"
"'A celebration'? Of what?"
"Me getting an assignment! I've been given a posting."
"You have?" Shinji asked.
Kensuke's eyes grew bright. "I bet that I know. It's going to be some sort of super secret facility where they work on highly classified projects. Right?"
"Actually... no," Misato replied. "I've been given command of one of the defense bases that protect the city and the planet."
"Where they'll have all that secret weaponry?"
"It's a regular base," Hikari corrected, "with only special things going on when it has to be brought in. Isn't that what you mean?"
"That's right," Misato confirmed.
"See? And after... you know, I don't think that she wants to get into all that stuff again."
"You've hit it on the nose. It'll be all on the level, and in a way that I can be in control."
"Doesn't sound like it's much to celebrate, given that you're just going away on a regular posting," Toji commented.
"Considering what we've all been through, and the fact that this is my first one on this world, it's a really good thing to have happen. Though.... I'm not sure about bringing Asuka and Shinji out there."
"What?" Asuka growled. "Why not?"
"You've been getting to have a normal life, one that you can feel comfortable with. Dragging you off to live on base, and making you start over again is something that I'd rather not do automatically. Both you and Shinji need to be around people who you can connect to."
"That's true...."
"Besides, I don't know what the quarters over there are. It might be that I'll only get my own set of rooms, which would mean that you'd have to stay in the closet, or something. And in that case, it'd could be more comfortable for you to stay here until my time there was over."
"I didn't think about it like that...." Asuka admitted.
"But I don't want you guys to think that I don't want you around. If I can make it happen, I'd love to have you two come out to stay with me."
"That might be nice," Shinji put in.
"And since there are now so many possibilities, let's go celebrate them all! Especially since now that I'm going to get the base commander pay when I start the assignment, I have the opportunity to splurge a bit more than I would before my orders came through."
Shinji looked at the major's bright expression for a long moment, before turning to face Asuka. "The usual?"
"The usual," the redhead sighed.
"What's with you guys? Hey!" Misato complained, frowning as she took in the pair's rueful looks, while:
