So You Want to be a Duelist: Extrance Exam [Episode 156566]

by Proteus

“Okay now take your place as indicated by the marks on the floor and load your duel disk,” the man on the other side of the rather cramped dueling area said right as Mokuba entered and the door shut behind him. “Since I am the one administering this test, I will go first.”

Mokuba only listened to the man half-heartedly while he did as instructed. He knew the routine forwards and backwards since every duel was reordered and watched by his brother eventually. After turning on his duel disk, he drew the five card starting hand and waited for the Administrator to begin. Let’s see, Archfiend Soldier, Axe of Despair, Barrel Behind the Door, Obnoxious Celtic Guard, and Ring of Destruction

“Now let’s begin!” the Administrator yelled as he drew his sixth card.

Mokuba: 4000 Administrator: 4000

“I’ll start by summoning Goblin Attack Force in attack mode, and placing one card face down,” the man said as he slapped down his monster card before putting a card in one of the Magic/Trap card holding slots. A small group of green creatures appeared on the field wearing helmets and holding various weapons in front of a giant floating card.

Goblin Attack Force ATK: 2300 DEF:0

“Okay here goes,” Mokuba said before taking his sixth card from his deck. “I’ll start by summoning Archfiend Soldier in attack mode. Then I’ll equip it with the Axe of Despair to increase its attack points by one thousand.” A purple demon with a skull and horn motif holding a curved sword and wearing a dark brown cape appeared on the field, a second later its sword was replaced by a large axe with a curved blade and its attack points climbed by a thousand.

Archfiend Soldier with Axe of Despair ATK:2900 DEF:1500

“Archfiend Soldier, attack Goblin Attack Force!” Mokuba ordered before the monster ran forward and spun around with his axe extended to cleave the entire group of monsters in two. “Next I’ll set two cards face down, and that ends my turn!”

Mokuba: 4000 Administrator: 3400

The administrator drew his card and opened his mouth to say something, but was cut off by Mokuba. “Now I’ll play my ring of destruction, and attach it to my Archfiend Soldier!” One of the cards near Mokuba’s feet raised up to reveal a purple colored card with the picture of a metal ring with red colored oval objects attached all along the outside. “This card will destroy my monster and do damage to both of us equal to its attack points!”

“At least it would, if I didn’t have this!” the administrator yelled before revealing his face down card. It was another purple card with the picture of a highballed keep in the distance. “Royal Decree negates every other trap card on the field.”

Mokuba snapped his fingers in irritation as his Ring of Destruction card shattered without activating and the administrator continued on. “But since I’ll need to be using my trap cards soon, I’ll play Emergency Provisions and sacrifice my Royal Decree to gain a thousand life points.” A green card with a picture of two canned rations appeared for a moment before both it and Royal Decree slowly faded away.

Mokuba: 4000 Administrator: 4400

“Next I’ll play the magic card Snatch Steal,” the man said as he placed another magic card into his duel disk. A magic card with the picture of a man with a bloated sack thrown across his shoulder was running from someone trying to grab him. “This card lets me take control of one of your monsters, and gives you one thousand life points at the start of every turn you take.” A glow surrounded Archfiend Soldier and he jumped over to the administrator’s side of the field.

“Now Archfiend Soldier, attack my opponent directly with Axe of Despair!” the administrator yelled before the creature cut into Mokuba with his weapon. “And I’ll place one card face down, then end my turn.”

Mokuba: 1100 Administrator: 4400

The younger Kaiba gulped nervously as his life points decreased. “Okay, my turn,” Mokuba said as he drew his card and frowned at the Wingbeat of Giant Dragon card fate had dealt him. “First I gain one thousand life points because of your Snatch Steal magic card.”

Mokuba: 2100 Administrator: 4400

“Next, I’ll play one monster card face down, and end my turn,” the boy said with a grimace as the single card between what was left of his life points and what used to be his monster appeared on the field.

The administrator shook his head at the boy’s pitiful defense as he drew his card. “Well boy, this is where it ends. First I’ll play Monster Reborn to bring back my Goblin Attack Force from the graveyard.” The aforementioned spell card faded from view a few seconds after the Administrator played it and was replaced by the group of goblins Mokuba’s Archfiend Soldier had mowed down earlier. “First I’ll attack you with my Goblin Attack Force to destroy your face down card.” Goblin Attack Force struck the face down card with bombs, cannonballs, and other sorts of artillery until there was a cloud of black smoke.

“And that’s all your gonna do this turn, because my Obnoxious Celtic Guard can’t be destroyed by monsters with over eighteen hundred attack points,” Mokuba shouted as the smoke cleared to reveal a crouching elf wearing old armor and holding a sword. Its attack done, the Goblin Attack Force went into defense position.

Obnoxious Celtic Guard ATK:1400 DEF:1200

The man simply sighed before placing another card in his magic/trap zone. “There’s more than one way to deplete your life points you know. I end my turn.”

“Okay, my draw,” said Mokuba before reaching to grab a card from his deck.

“Now you’ll loose one thousand life points thanks to my trap card,” the administrator said as he revealed his face down card. A trap card rose up with the picture of a sickly woman shuddering while tendrils of gas reached for her. “Bad Reaction to Simochi negates all life point increases, and changes them to damage direct to your life points.”

Mokuba: 1100 Administrator: 4400

Mokuba frowned at his life point meter. “So I’ve only got two turns to beat you then. That’s doable.” With that, the boy placed another card face down next to the one he already had.

“Not with that lousy move,” the administrator said before drawing. He looked at the card for a moment, and then placed it on his duel disk. “Since I don’t have any monsters in my hand or on the field that can get past your guardian, I’ll place one card face down, and end my turn.”

Mokuba raised one of his eyebrows at the comment. “What? Don’t you carry any monster card in that deck of yours other than those goblins?”

“Of course I do,” the administrator replied with a frown. “But if you think I’m going to start calling them out to you, you’re dead wrong. You see boy, after your cards and checked for authentication, you are then set up against one of the test duelists that has the greatest chance of taking you down.”

“Wait a minute! You’re saying that you know every card in my deck?” Mokuba shouted.

The administrator shook his head. “No, that would be cheating. However, I do know that your deck as obliviously been stacked with rare and powerful cards with extremely high attack points. You wouldn’t have been assigned to me if that weren’t the case. I’m even betting that one monster you have out on the field is the only defense monster in your entire deck! We don’t just let kids with good cards into this school, or even kids that can simply link cards together and duplicate combos they’ve seen at other tournaments. To show that you’re worthy of this fine institution, you have to prove your worthiness by showing us you can overcome your weaknesses.”

The younger Kaiba sweatdropped and chuckled nervously. “Okay, okay.” I forgot how over the top some of these guys could be, he thought before drawing his card.

“And now my trap and magic cards take another chunk out of your life points.”

Mokuba: 100 Administrator: 4400

“I KNOW OKAY?” Mokuba yelled. This guy was really starting to get on his nerves. “I’ll place one monster card face down, and end my turn.”

The administrator laughed. “That’s it?” He drew another card and shook his head. “You see my boy, you can have all the powerful monsters you want, but they take time to summon, and that’s something I’m not giving you. Even if you can survive this turn, you’ll automatically loose after you draw your next card. I switch Goblin Attack Force back into attack mode, and summon Drillago.” A machine monster with drills in place of his hands and head appeared on the field. “Normally this monster would be able to attack my opponent directly, but since you have a face down card and one with less attack points than Drillago, I can’t do that this turn.”

Drillago ATK:1600 DEF:1100

“Now Drillago, destroy his Obnoxious Celtic Guard!” The machine monster charged forward and rammed into the elf with all three of its drills. The Celtic Guard yelled in pain as it shattered to pieces. “And now I’ll destroy your face down card with my Goblin Attack Force!”

“That activates my face down cards special ability,” Mokuba said as his monster card flipped over to reveal a spherical robot with what looked like a mouth. “My Cyberjar destroys all monsters on the field when its flipped face up by its owner or an attack.” All the monsters on the field then shattered before Mokuba could continue. “Next we each draw five cards, and if any of them are monsters level four or lower, we have to summon them to the field in faceup attack, or face down defense.”

The administrator did so, setting down a card that summoned a giant gray humanoid with a fat stomach and held a giant bone like a club.

Giant Orc ATK:2200 DEF:0

Mokuba set down one card that summoned a man in a cape that was wearing armor and a helmet made out of dragon bones while he looked at the cards Polymerization, Kiryu, Dark Blade, and De-Fusion.

Lord of Dragons ATK:1200 DEF:1100

“And now it ends,” the administrator said before he had his Giant Orc go for Mokuba’s Lord of Dragons.

“If you’re talking about your battle phase, then your dead on,” Mokuba said before trigging one of his facedown cards. A trap card rose with the picture of three energy beams spiraling towards the middle of the card with a colorful background. “My Negate Attack trap card stops both your attack, and your battle phase. But since your monster’s attack was negated, he stays in attack position.”

The administrator just shrugged. “Why bother? Now that I’m ending my turn, as soon as you draw a card, you’ll take one thousand points of damage and loose.”

“Wrong again,” Mokuba replied as he drew his card and activated the other card that was facing the floor. The picture of a giant golden gun facing a partially opened door gleamed on the card for a moment as the effect activated. “Barrel Behind the Door stops all damage coming to me that isn’t done because of a battle, and sends it right back to you.”

Mokuba: 100 Administrator: 3400

“Next, I’ll play my Flute of summoning Dragon magic card to call my Tyrant Dragon and Kiryu to the field.” A small curved horn with the head of a dragon appeared in the Lord of Dragons’ hands, when it blew it two monsters appeared next to him. One what a giant red dragon with wings and fin-like ears on the side of his head, the other was much smaller and covered by a thick armored hide that had an orange-red tint.

Tyrant Dragon ATK:2900 DEF:2500

Kiryu ATK:2000 DEF:1500

“Then I’ll play Wingbeat of Giant Dragon and return Kiryu to my hand to destroy both your face down card, and your Bad Reaction to Simochi.” A magic card with a picture of a dragon flying over a group of rocks that were being torn apart by high winds appeared behind Mokuba’s Kiryu. The smaller dragon rose into the air and started to flaps its wings to kick up dust, and both the administrator’s cards shattered as Mokuba’s dragon disappeared.

“With your face down card out of the way, I’ll play Polymerization to fuse my Lord of Dragon’s on the field with the Divine Dragon Ragnarok in my hand to create King Dragun!” Mokuba shouted before putting his second to last card in one of his magic and trap card slot. The Lord of Dragons disappeared to be replaced by a naga wearing gold dragon armor and carrying a flute of summoning dragon.

King Dragun ATK:2400 DEF:1100

“And with my King Dragun on the field, I can use his special ability to summon my Kiryu back to the field in attack position,” Mokuba said with a smirk. “Now Tyrant Dragon, attack his Giant Orc!” In response to his order, the giant dragon let out a roar and shot a fireball from its mouth that consumed the orc.

Mokuba: 100 Administrator: 2700

“Now Kiryu and King Dragun, attack his life points directly,” Mokuba yelled as King Dragun raised it’s dragon flute to fire an energy blast at the boy’s opponent, followed by the Kiryu opening its mouth to hit the administrator with a lighting bolt from its mouth to knock the man’s last few points away.

Mokuba’s final LP count: 100

“But… you… YOU CAN’T SUMMON THAT MANY MONSTERS IN ONE TURN!” The administrator cried.

Mokuba just shrugged. “Well, while its true high powered monsters usually take time to summon, creative duelists can find way around that little problem instead of being too scared to include them in their decks. Even I know that,” he said while holding his hands and shaking his head.

“But… but I can’t loose! I never loose! I call foul! I demand a re-test! I…”

Mokuba stopped listening to the man’s ranting as he left the small dueling ring and walking away from the guy. “And I thought Seto required psych evaluations in all his employees,” the boy mumbled as he went to the judges in order to find out his score.
