"The original colonists didn't know about the reikoku paths of this planet, only that there were peculiar energy discharges from time to time - visible from space," said the teacher, bringing up a display. "The mystery of those discharges was deemed something to investigate at a later date. When survival of the colony was in jeapordy daily - there was simply no one and no time to investigate."
"That's when the monsters started showing up," guessed Ranma.
"That is so," agreed the teacher, running a hand through her hair. "The Feydine. They seem to appear within 5 kilometers of the reikoku points, but we haven't run across a method of determining where exactly they will appear. They only appear when the reikoku flow is contaminated, which is unfortunately often.
"Feydine all come in different looks," continued the teacher, "but then we have some which are close enough to be grouped together - such as wakiji which are anywhere from twice an adult human's height to four times that. We developed the pokeboys for other reasons but it became obvious in time that we would have to rely on pokeboys for much of the fighting. Can you guess why?"
"Ya don't have the right weapons?" asked Ranma.
"Very good," acknowledged the teacher. "We had pokeboys around first, but then with the Feydine we had to work out ways of combatting that new enemy. Pokeboys became our experiment, and we found a few things out the hard way. We can't immerse someone directly into the reikoku stream, for example, but the breeds associated with the experiment started showing new abilities and we bred them to increase those abilities."
"Special manuevers?" asked Ranma, thinking that sounded cool.
"Yes, I suppose," said the teacher. "Bears, for example, were simply large and strong before the reikoku influence - whereas now they can tap into ambient energy and apparently increase their density."
"Oh?" asked Ranma, wondering what density meant.
"Lyorns gained their Roar technique," Maho said, the teacher using the boy's terms to make it easier. "Tygars gained the ability to enter a battlerage. Cheetaur gained their Accelerate technique, and so on."
"So I need to get some of this reikoku to learn this stuff," realized Ranma.
"Oh no, humans can only take a little exposure before they get reikoku poisoning," said Maho. "It's really not suitable for more than tiny amounts."
"Ohhhh," said a disappointed Ranma.
"If you want to learn what humans can do with exposure to reikoku, there's one of your new playmates who has some of that," said Maho. "She's coming from Vishna, which has some of the worst attacks of the Feydine. Her name is:
