That was where the city that he knew and this city stopped being similar.
As Shinji read the book, he immediately noticed the absence of what he'd originally been involved with. Instead of the 'Angels' being some sort of strange life form, they were part of a group of creatures who had caused global devastation years earlier. Whether they were mystical or demonic wasn't exactly clear, but what was obvious was that they were not friendly. In fact, they seemed to seek out people to annihilate.
Since this was certainly considered to be a 'bad' thing, a force had been created to fight against this enemy, and it was for that reason that NERV had been created. Instead of the need to simply block 'Third Impact', they were out to fight this group of strange monsters as a front line defense. The time since the last attack had been spent in preparing for the return of the enemy, and so they were better prepared for this incident.
"You're supposed to fight demons?" he asked.
"That we are," Misato answered brightly. "It's our job to make certain that the same incident that happened back then doesn't happen again."
"And you have something that can fight that thing?"
"Sure do."
"Which will be a giant robot, right?"
"How did you.... Did you see that in the book?"
Shinji gave her a weak smile. "Lucky guess."
"Oh?"
"Giant monster.... Giant robot.... Just seem to go together, right?"
"You're right on that one."
Blowing out a breath, he tried not to slump over in relief as he considered the situation, and hoped that things would go better than they had before. With the way that things stood, he wasn't sure if he should jump for joy, be confused by the changes, or simply allow himself to worry about how he could use his knowledge of how things were on this new version of everything.
With the book on his lap, he watched as the care went on, while:
