"When are you not, silly girl. Toast or onigiri?"
The girl in the buns and tails blinked at her mother. What was this, leftover finishing day?
"Both! Gimmegimmegimme!"
Her younger brother sighed, watching his sister run out of the door with a piece of toast in her mouth and a nori-wrapped rice ball in her hand, a swath of multicolored lightspecks trailing after her in a festive dance. Some of them even looked like they were - imitating running while stuffing stuff in their non-existent mouths?
That was Usagi, duh.
His parents had once said that she'd never stay lost for long when she was young - they were always able to find her by following the sprites and fairies dancing...
The fire sprites danced around her, chittering and serene.
"...Rei. Child, why are you trying to take my ashtray to school?"
Hino Rei scowled at her grandfather.
"I'm tired of them making burnholes on my desk, darnit!"
Not to mention the tatami. She was quite sure most other kids didn't sleep with buckets of water by their beds...
Her grandfather just rolled his eyes.
"Heavens, child. Just take a fire-can..."
Rei only sniffed.
"Those. ...Old men who spend their time betting on the horses and spend all day in the pachinko parlors have that kind of thing."
"But Rei..."
...Surely somebody must be making firecans stylish enough for young girls, someplace.
It only stood to reason.
She walked slowly, Juku textbook in hand.
The monthly tests were coming up, and she'd be damned if...
...Awk.
Just what was it with ice sprites and their fascination with the back of her neck, anyhow?
Ahh, well. It wasn't so bad in the summer, actually - in the summer, there were less ice spirits around and more warm-water ones, but at least she ended up cooler then most of the people walking in the street. Usually.
But now...
The blue-haired girl takes out a candle-shaped lighter, and puts in next to her on the bus stop bench.
At least with fire sprites around, the water and ice ones would have more things to play with then her...
The girl in the pony tail craned her head, trying to get a good look at the top of the electricity poles.
By the way all those thunder sprites were grumbling and nattering... Yup, definitely something wrong here. Was that a spark? Hard to tell with all the sprites bouncing around....
OK, just were was she supposed to call with things like this? Not the police, surely... the fire department?
The park is silent, now.
The young girl is still on the swing, rocking, rocking.
"...She's creepy."
"Don't say that."
"She is. The sprites and fairies all run when she comes near!"
In is very quiet, in the park, for everybody is gone, now. The girl sits with downcast purple eyes.
