“Oh I almost forgot,” Gina said before stopping and pulling off her backpack to reach inside it and pull out a bundled cloth. “Put this on and pull the hood up. Don’t let it down while were in the village.”
Brittany unrolled the dull brown piece of cloth to find out it was a thick cloak, wool by the feel of it. “And now you want me die from heatstroke too?” she asked with a frown.
Gina rolled her eyes and wondered why she had to have such a stubborn sister. Real assistants were supposed to marvel at their mentor’s genius and never ask questions. She then reached over to her pack to pull out a small reference journal, thumbed through it for a few seconds, and then showed the picture she had found to Brittany. “I came across this during my research. It’s is supposed to be an accurate drawing of a group of Musk done in the 1600’s. Take a look at the ears.”
“Yeah, yeah,” Brittany mumbled before looking at the picture. She wasn’t an art critic, but she supposed it was… passable. It pictured a group of seven men dressed in different animal skins. Most of them were off in the background and their faces weren’t that visible, but the man the picture seemed to be the focus of was drawn clear enough to make all of the details out. Not too bad looking all in all, dressed up in a wolf’s pelt… Brittany moved her eyes to look at the part Gina had told her to, and blinked a couple times. “Pointed ears?” she asked with a frown while reaching up to finger her own. Even in her human form the girl still had a few inhuman traits, like the black spots in her hair, and ears that matched the ones in the picture. “You mean these guys are were-”
“No,” Gina cut in before Brittany could finish her question. “I called dad to see if he knew anyone that went with that theory, but from what I told him about these Musk guys, he thinks they either tried to do something similar to what the wizard to made werecreatures and got one of the same side effects, or it’s just artistic licensing. Even the most humanoid demons and monsters from Eastern lore have some kind of trait that makes it blatantly obvious that they’re demons.”
The currently smaller Diggers let out a sigh. She supposed Gina had a point there. Besides, all these guys were wearing skins and furs that were from Chinese animals, nothing from Africa. Even if the guy decided to draw people in pelts instead of humanoid animals, nobody was wearing spotted attire. “Okay,” Brittany mumbled before backing to for some room and adding the tackiest thing she had ever seen to her ensemble and pulling the hood up to cover her spotted hair and ears. “And what happens if they ask me to take it off?”
“Just tell them you have skin that’s very sensitive to sunlight,” Gina said before taking a moment to come up with the actual name to that particular condition in case anyone asked Brittany. Although the chances of finding anyone who could speak English at this place was about a billion to one.
Brittany rolled her eyes. “I can’t believe I’m actually going along with this.”
“Whatever, now come along Igor, the doctor has work to do,” Gina told her baby sister before continuing to walk inside the village.
“You may not be able to tell right now, but I’m trembling with rage,” Brittany replied before stomping after her.
