"Is that so?" Misato asked.
"Yes, ma'am. You see, we thought that it might be helpful for you to be introduced to the people that you would be working with directly."
"That's a good idea, except for one little error in your thinking."
The redhead frowned at her words. "What did I miss?"
"It's more like what you couldn't know. And that happens to be the fact that I like to get my hands dirty, as it were. Even if I don't know the people under my command by name, I like to get in there and help out where I can."
"Even to the point of working along side them?"
"Yup. But there is something else. Please don't call me 'ma'am'. I'm really not that old, and if you need to call me something, try 'Major', or even, maybe once we get to know each other, 'Misato'," the major complained, sounding rather put out about it.
"I'll keep that in mind. And I think that I will like serving with you."
"Now that is a sentiment that we can both share."
Light was shining through her window when Motoko Kusanagi woke up, and she blinked against the shine of the sun as she twisted under the sheets as she went to wakefulness. Realizing that it was time for her to get up, she slid into a sitting position, and stayed there for a moment as she let her thoughts clear themselves of any remaining sleepiness. A part of her wondered if human women had the same sort of physical sensations and waking routines that she did, but she immediately dismissed that as being unimportant.
There was work to be done, and a unit to set up, so she climbed out of bed and headed off to wash up for the day.
"Mmmm.... Breakfast is always the most important meal of the day," Ross commented as he laid his fork down onto his plate.
"Because it gets you started for the day, right, Daddy?" Yoko asked with a bright smile.
"Sure does. And when you have a pretty lady making it for you, it's really good."
"Like Mommy?"
He nodded at his daughter, and sent a meaningful glance at his wife. "Yes, most certainly like your mommy."
"I'm glad that I'm appreciated," Naomi mock-grumbled. "And that you both seem to enjoy my food so much."
"But of course we do. And I like other things about you as well."
"There's one strange thing about this...." their daughter said uncertainly.
Ross gazed at her sympathetically at his child. "What would that be?"
"If it's really good to have a pretty lady making breakfast for me, then will I need to get one when I grow up?"
"Ahh.... Eh.... Well...."
"It all depends on what happens when you grow up. You might have a pretty girl, a handsome boy, or someone to cook your breakfast for you. But do you know what?" Naomi told her daughter, sharing an embarrassed look with her husband.
"No," Yoko replied. "What?"
"When you grow up, I'm sure that you'll be the 'pretty girl' when you grow up."
"Really?"
"Really."
"Thanks, Mommy!"
"You're welcome, Yoko."
"And we'll be here to see you become that girl. We'll see it happen, you know, and work won't keep me from being there," Ross said... and then frowned at his watch. "Speaking of work...."
"It's time for you to go, Daddy?" Yoko said.
"It is, I'm afraid."
"See you later then, Daddy."
"See you later, sweetheart," he said, and gave her a kiss on the top of the head. Then he leaned over and gave his wife a soft kiss on her mouth. "And I'll see you when I get back too."
"Don't worry. I'll be there. You just have a good day at work," Naomi told him.
"I'm a security guard. What could happen?"
The look that his wife gave him said volumes.
"Yeah, yeah. I know...."
"Take it easy."
"I will," he said with a nod, and headed out the kitchen, while:
