So, as she walked into the lobby of the building where Section 9 had been working on setting up for this new world, she was in her regular clothes. Sure, they might be a bit revealing, and got her some admiring stares, but that wasn't a problem for her. She was confident in who she was, and didn't see any reason to be forceful in the face of problems.
However, it was clear by the display going on elsewhere in the lobby that this was not something that all women followed.
"What did you say?!" growled an attractive young woman who had her hands balled up in fists, ready to strike.
The man standing in front of her gave a smarmy smile. "I said that you'd be great company for a lonely soldier on the battlefield. But your tin friend here isn't much to look at."
"Why you...."
The 'tin friend', who was a tall bulky figure, moved between the pair and put his hands out to stop her. "Don't do it, Deunan."
"Why not? He deserves it."
"If you think so, then that's fine by me. But remember that I know what this cyborg body of mine doesn't look all that attractive...."
"Which is totally true," the other guy said with an amused snort. "Of course, I'm sure that you have a reason for looking like that. As for me, my body's cybernetics were designed to look good. It's really designed wonderfully."
"Is that so?" commented Motoko as she stepped over to the trio.
"Why, yes it is, gorgeous. I've got plenty of tricks up my sleeve."
"I see. Then you must hate it when you have to connect to contact computers for maintenance."
The human looking cyborg male grinned. "Nope. Don't have to. I've got a wireless receiver in my head."
"Bet that makes life easier for you."
"It certainly does. I'm tough, I'm capable, and I'm great in bed. With my body, I'm so much more ahead of heaps of metal like him, it's not even funny."
"He's probably got more power."
"So? I've got all the power that I need."
"Which is all that I need to use," the major told him.
"Huh?"
All Motoko did was give him a look that told him that she had something up her sleeve.
But he didn't have an opportunity to question what that was as he felt his hand tighten into a fist without him trying to do it. His attempts to loosen the hand didn't work, even when he started to try to keep his arm from moving as it started to do so on its own. Yet, that didn't work, as all his concentration proved to not be enough... as he punched himself so hard in the face that he knocked himself out.
One corner of Motoko's mouth quirked up. "That never gets old."
"What just happened?" the other woman asked.
"I used the wireless connection that he was so proud of to hack into his body control. From there, it was easy to make him do what I wanted."
"How could you do that...."
"You're a cyborg too," the tall metal cyborg observed.
"Exactly."
"I thought so. You have to have some cybernetic parts to be able to do something like that."
"Maybe then she could go instead of us," the woman with him muttered.
"This isn't like back where we come from."
"I know that, but I still know that the crap from there could still be around here. They ordered us to come here, didn't they?"
"Am I missing something?" Motoko asked.
"Only that we were told to come here to meet with some special department that was setting up. Just what they would want with us, I don't know."
"You do know," her companion idly said.
"Oh, okay. Sure, I know that. But how do we know what they want with us?"
"It could be innocent."
"It could be more trash for us. For all we know, they could be another bunch of egotistical bureaucrats who don't know shit about military operations."
"I wouldn't say that, Miss Knute," the major told her. "You really should take Briareos' advice."
"How the hell do you know who we are?"
"I am Major Motoko Kusanagi, the field commander of Section Nine, the section that you're being considered as a possible recruit for. Of course, that would mean that I would be reading over your files to see if you were a good fit, which you both just might be. That is why you were called for an interview."
"And this is more funny stuff?"
"It's our job to stop 'funny stuff'. My team is made to deal with all sorts of criminal activities, so that they don't become big problems. Sometimes, the politicians don't like it, but we do get results."
"You're considering us for that?" Deunan Knute asked.
"We are. You two are good for team commanders, and covert ops. We give you a reason to fight for, and you give us the skills we need to keep little men with big egos from causing trouble."
"This might be more interesting than I thought," Deunan drawled, while:
