City Of Crossroads: Office Talk [Episode 163545]

by Kender

When the door to her office opened, Misato didn't know what she should expect. Sure, she was the base commander, but it was still a military installation, and such places weren't exactly always designed to be impressive. As this was a working base, she was reasonably certain that she was about to enter a fairly tiny place where she would be stuck for all the time that she had to work on the forms that a place like this would generate.

She was pleasantly surprised by what awaited her.

The room was large enough to fit a small sitting area, and fairly nice desk. On the desk was a computer station, and on one wall there were some cabinets. Large windows in another wall let in a lot of light, and it didn't feel stuffy at all. It was obvious that this was either some designer's attempt to be nice to the officer who would occupy this space, or was simply an opportunity caused by the design, but at least what little room they could give was included in the space.

"Man, am I lucky or what?" she idly asked as she lazily headed over to sit herself down at the sitting area.

Rabby gave her a small shrug. "That's pretty true, but think about it. This isn't exactly a hotel, you know."

"Yeah, yeah.... But still, it's got clean lines, nice enough fabric, and it isn't in a color that looks like it's from an institution."

"This is one, isn't it?"

"Trust me, there is a difference," Misato said as she leaned back in her chair. "Back where I came from, I had to deal with rest lounges where a girl has to shift to find that one spot that is actually comfortable! And when you deal with guys on their feet all day, you get furniture that doesn't have to look good, so long as it's comfortable."

"Isn't that the important thing though?"

"Yes... so long as you don't have to look at it sometimes."

"Then I take it that you enjoyed your tour," the redhead commented, seating herself, and crossing her legs.

"Pretty much. It's always nice to get to know the people that you're working with. Though.... I do have to admit that you didn't seem comfortable all the time...."

The other woman didn't even pretend to not understand what she meant. "I simply can't enjoy being hit on by a pilot like him. It is already hard enough having to serve with men, but to have some... what is the word... 'flyboy' try to flirt with me isn't fun for me."

"Unfortunately, there are plenty of guys who are out there like that, and not all of them are pilots. And it's just your bad luck that we have to deal with him all the time."

"I can handle it. He might be an officer, but I'm not about to simply undress, even if I'm not experienced with dealing with males. But there is one good thing about being hit on by a man for someone from my background."

"And that is...."

"Those sorts of folks come in both genders, but you don't have to share a locker room or a bathroom with a guy."

Misato let out a loud laugh. "That's really true. I don't know how many times I used the 'ladies's room' excuse...."

"You had that sort of problem?"

"I used to date that sort of problem. And he didn't stop when we saw each other again after we broke up."

"That sounds awkward. But at least not all men that I have met are... troublesome. Our chief technician isn't one to flirt," Rabby told her.

"He's also not one to relax. Man's got to take it easy once in a while."

"And what about Doctor Joshua?"

"Karen Joshua," the major murmured, her eyes narrowing in thought. "A doctor who can pilot a combat mecha. I don't know if I should be afraid, or amused. Though I'll have to consider her request carefully."

"Then there really is a problem with her abilities?"

"Not particularly. The thing is that there are a lot of folks around now that aren't human. She's been trained for handling the cases, but she knows that she's not going to be an expert. She'd like to have one."

"But could you get one?" her subordinate asked.

"Who knows? Those sorts of doctors are in short supply. She's a tough woman, though, and I'm sure that having been part of an MS squadron will help her keep her cool. She's just being a professional. There is one thing that I'm mildly concerned about."

"Christina MacKenzie. She was a test pilot for a Gundam prototype, but now she's working here. Why is that?"

"Other than the fact that she's been assigned here, we don't know."

"There may be nothing to know," Misato allowed. "I mean, we've got an elf girl as the civilian liaison for the base, and that's got to be strange enough."

"You want it that calm?"

"'Calm' is good. 'Calm' is nice. 'Calm' doesn't have idiots trying stupid things in that are only good in their minds because they think they they know better than everyone else."

Rabby could only nod in agreement, while:
