Family Connections: Funerals And Family.... [Episode 162580]

by Kender

The room was quiet, and calm, with no one really showing much life to them. Conversations were done in hushed tones, if at all, and when they did talk, it was always with the sort of forced politeness that one only brought out at serious events. Even clothing was somber, with most of them being in shades of black, and everyone showing respect. About the only decorations were sedate ones, and the sole picture in the room had black bands on it.

Ranma had never really been to many funerals in his life, though that wasn't because he'd been on the road for most of it. He just hadn't had anyone connected to him die before, and getting to experience it for the first time wasn't something that he was celebrating. After all, someone had to die for him to get to go to this one, and he wasn't the sort of experiencing things just for being able to say that he had.

He pulled at his collar, but it wasn't because he was in a formal outfit at the moment, though there was that effect at the moment. The fact that a relative of his had died only made him feel a little guilty, as he hadn't even known the man existed until he found out that he'd have to go to the funeral. Instead, what was really bothering him was his father's reaction to all of this.

The pigtailed boy hadn't known his great-uncle, but there was apparently some distance between him and his father. It was clear that this now deceased relative had been someone that even Genma was distancing himself from, and Ranma thought that it might even be possible that his father might actually be finding something about the man to be distasteful. Just what that was, he didn't know, because the old man kept his mouth shut for once, and held only his own counsel.

Sighing to himself, Ranma gave his collar one last jerk, and then smoothed his hand out over the shirt as he sighed in frustration.

"Not exactly a fun time, is it?" a male voice asked.

Turning around, Ranma looked at a stranger wearing sunglasses. "Yeah, but what's it ta ya?"

"Just making an observation," the older man told him.

"Oh, okay. Just had ta wonder why ya'd be wantin' ta just pop up like that."

"I just felt like it, but I'm glad that I did. It tells me that you're just as good as your great-uncle said you were."

"He talked 'bout me?" Ranma asked, frowning slightly.

"He did. I know that you don't know much about him, but he paid a lot of attention to you, and made sure that we know how special you were."

"He did?"

"Yes, and he kept track of you for a long time. In fact, he even did something special for you."

"And that is?"

"He made it clear that he wanted you to be there to take his place," the man told him.

"'Xcuse me?"

A slow smirk came across the man's features. "He wanted you to be the next boss of our little... 'group'. Before he died, he told us to support you, let you lead, give you all sorts of benefits, and, perhaps even take full charge of our organization."

"Wait a sec...."

"It was one of his dying wishes, and we don't ever break the sort promises that we make, especially in those kinds of situations."

Glancing over at the other men now flanking him with an odd look of respect, Ranma started to understand what was going on, while:
