Seventy miles of another universe. A naval base was missing. A CITY was missing. To say that the people investigating were a little trigger-happy right now would vastly understate the matter.
Undead legions pouring from the area to run amok in modern day Japan just gave the people involved a REASON to be trigger-happy.
Fireballs and lightning went up to attack a group of Apache attack helicopters that were sent in for surveillance. The pilots did not know these were magical attacks. They DID know they were under attack as one unlucky plane was torn apart. Therefore details like skeletal horses were placed to the side and instead they returned fire with great enthusiasm.
That wasn't to say that people back in the control rooms weren't telling the pilots to show some restraint. Obviously the camera feeds had been hacked or something. Right?
Blackskinned pointy-eared elves racing into cracks into the ground, only to find those cracks didn't actually seem to lead anywhere - that was one thing.
