The aliens were hundreds of millions of years old. Ancient and powerful, with access to technology that had been developing for so long that even the aliens themselves only had partial awareness of specific parts of it.
They regarded less-developed species as clever animals at best. Certainly they were not the pinnacle of creation the way the aliens themselves were.
In the "Sombrero Galaxy" there was a star system with four worlds in the same orbit, all equidistant. Originally the star system had been uninhabitable, with vast rocky planets close in to the star and nothing much of value. One of the aliens (who called themselves simply The People) came up with an idea and spent a few centuries putting it together.
Something much like a zoo, a display of these creatures that had a debased mimickry of something like civilization. Each hex would be of a time and place, a segment of that animal's natural habitat.
Naturally, certain tweaks to the animals and their environment had to be made. Also quite naturally - the zoo itself was just a stage along the line of what the plans would eventually develop. A race that was as near to immortal and omnipotent as The People could afford to take such a long view.
Whether The People were still around, or if they'd left their machines running unattended, or if they were dead and gone - none of the "zoo animals" knew.
It was spectacularly unfortunate that the first one to find one of the walls was flying a jet, but their radars had reported the invisible barrier's presence so it wasn't a complete surprise.
Each wall was invisible, but could easily take the impact of everything from fist to Hellfire missile without give.
Though some people were panicking, some were less prone to do so. Looking through the Wall, one could quickly discover that they were surrounded by:
