The event that completely threw off the evolutionary track as it occurred in the Sailor Senshi's original dimension was actually quite interesting. During the Paradox Storm Ranma had been shot into the past and he tragically died by drowning into a small lake. Now the interesting thing about this particular lake was the fact that in the original timeline it became Jusenkyo. The multiple pools with the water curses had come about in the original timeline due to a fierce battle that had occurred in the area during the fall of the Silver Millennium.
However, Ranma's drowning had radically changed the history of this lake. The water in the lake held magical properties due to the lake's source being one of the rare natural sources of magic on Earth. Originally, the magical properties of this lake's water weren't activated until that future battle. With Ranma's death the residual magic clinging to his corpse activated the magic of the lake water.
Now the lake didn't suddenly become "Lake of Drowned Human". Instead, the magic of the lake slowly started to change the genome of all of the creatures that drake for the lake. But in order for magic in the lake's waters to start these changes, the creature(s) in question had to drink from the lake regularly. Do to the fact that this lake was located in a very high and steep mountain range the only creatures that regularly drank from the lake were birds.
After a hundred years the local birds started to show signs that the lake's magic was working. These new birds were larger then their ancestors, they had bigger brains, and most importantly they had a second set of talons. Even as these new griffin-birds left the area around the lake the transformation continued. The magic with the birds continued to fuel their evolution until the end result was achieved when Homo Sapiens first appeared: a race of bird men.
These Homo Aves quickly encountered Homo Sapiens and the two races soon clashed over resources. Do to their better brain power, improved senses, and the power of flight Homo Aves eventually drove Homo Sapiens into extinction.
