Now that Ranma was a weapon of the Ancients which had been "mothballed" for millions of years, he had never died and been reincarnated as Ranma Saotome. He was simply Ranma as far as that was concerned, and that was merely an acronym serving as a name.
The Ancients had discovered the Wraith, had discovered other problems, and had come up with a Weapon. One of these new Weapons had run out of control and had only been stopped by two of the others. All the Weapons had been sealed away, until now.
Things had indeed changed.
Without an heir, Genma's marriage had grown increasingly more strained. His inability to produce an heir had provided a friction between himself and his wife that had ended with the two going their different ways. He blamed something that had happened under Happosai's tutelage, as it was an explanation or excuse at least.
So Genma spent a lot of time on the road. He did the 'wandering martial artist' role passably well, and he watched children play and dreamed of what might have been.
He even had a pupil, someone he had trained extensively in the Art though not to the extent he might have trained his Heir. Even when that pupil was away, he was constantly on the look out for new techniques and skills.

Genma could look at the little girl berating her big brother and smile, lost in a momentary fantasy of his own family - with the young boy and younger sister in those roles. Yes, that would have been an ideal situation with the little daughter that Nodoka could raise and the promising boy who would be taken for a long training journey. Eventually the old arrangement with Tendo would be met, and a new generation would be swiftly on the way.
With a heartfelt sigh, he banished the pleasant imagery. He had a student in the Art, and that was that and that was all. It wasn't as if this student was a BAD student after all, just one that had other concerns besides the Art and couldn't spend all their time in its practice.
Speaking of which, realized Genma with a glance at a pocket watch, it was time for the student to show up. The bus supposedly bringing them was scheduled to stop here - ah there it was. Maybe when his student arrived they could go make the formal acquaintance of this Ranma and set up some sparring.
Genma nodded. It would be interesting to see a little friendly sparring between this Ranma, obviously a hard/soft stylist with some knowledge of pressure points and nerve junctions, and his own student -
