And it let her see her friends a lot, just like now, what with Su trying to scarf down food, while Shinobu sighed over the other girl's lack of restraint.
Of course, being around her friends allowed her to see when things might not be going wrong. "You know, they go over this all the time, Naru. Shinobu isn't really trying to stop her. It's just fun."
"What? Oh, sorry," Naru replied sheepishly as she blinked away her confusion. "It wasn't them. I wasn't paying attention to it."
"Does that mean that you were ignoring us?" Kaolla teased.
Shinobu put on a mock hurt expression. "That wouldn't be nice, would it?"
"Now, now, guys.... I didn't mean to hurt your feelings," the married young woman murmured.
"'Hurt'? Nope. But it does mean that we'll have to try harder."
"Why you...."
"At least now you're paying attention," the dark haired girl said, grinning right back at Naru's smile.
Mitsune nodded with a thoughtful expression as she sat with her back to the table. "It doesn't change the fact that something is bothering you, Naru."
"You saw that, didn't you?" Naru reluctantly answered.
"Kind of hard not to. You were spacing out."
"I was not."
"You didn't even touch your lunch. Now, what is it? Did they have no openings for you?" Kitsune asked.
"Actually, they had quite a few of them."
"Then what's the problem?"
"I have to pick one of them, but since I'm a rookie teacher, I won't get the really good places," Naru sighed. "I mean, these choices aren't what I'd thought that I could get...."
"Are they good places to eat?" Su asked.
"Honestly? I don't know. The best place seems to be an all girls' school that doesn't allow for male teachers. But I'd only be a substitute there."
Nodding, Shinobu let her sympathy for her friend show clearly in her face. "And can you get a full time position?"
"Perhaps, but those don't look to be so promising. I mean, one place is supposed to be haunted. And another is a boys' school so full of rough guys, thugs, and wannabe gangsters that they warn female teachers that they might be in trouble there."
"And what about this place? It looks nice."
Glancing over at the paper that Shinobu held, the 'rookie teacher' shook her head. "That was the place that blew up a little while back. They just didn't pull the paper out before they gave me my packet."
"Oh."
"Well, you could always try that boys' school...." Kitsune drawled in amused tones.
Naru scowled at the tea shop manager. "What? Do you want me to be assaulted by gang members?"
"Not at all. I just think that if there is someone around that can show them that they are just silly little kids, it's you."
"You really think so?"
"I know so," Kitsune agreed, and put a hand on the newlywed's shoulder. "Don't worry. I know that whatever happens, you can not only deal with it, but do well."
"Mitsune...."
"Just one thing? Don't think that you being an 'Urashima' now means that you won't have to pay for that lunch of yours. You might be a big time landlady, but you were still the one that has been letting the lunch get cold."
None of the three other women could help themselves, and started laughing.
"Hey, I still have to run a business."
"Don't worry. I'll eat," Naru mock groaned, and shared a grin with Kitsune, while:
