Traveling with Lina Inverse always led to such... interesting situations.
Bring trapped in a town on the edge of a monster-infested plain, alone, without most her magic, and no way to get anywhere? Par for the course really. It just seemed to be something that happened when Lina got involved.
"Good morning, Miss Sylphiel!" Katrin, a young girl native to the town called to her, startling the Shrine Maiden from her thoughts.
"Good Morning, Katrin. How 's Duane?" Sylphiel asked with a small smile. A smile that grew larger as Katrin blushed... Katrin and Duane had been in love with each other for a while now, it seemed, and Sylphiel thought it was just about the cutest thing she'd ever witnessed.
"He's doing all right now, Miss Sylphiel. The medicine you made worked really well!"
Sylphiel was very grateful now that she chose to study how to make medicines and the like when back home. She'd done this for the simple reason that it was one of the few things that Lina didn't seem to know - or at least, not know much of. And she wanted to know something that might, just possibly, make her stand out to her dear Gourry.
Now, bereft of her magic, she found herself relying on those skills more and more. Molbiz, the town she was now in, was extremely isolated, and their previous healer had passed away from old age. Still, the healer had left excellent notes on how to craft his medicines, and Sylphiel could understand them well enough to take up the position for the time being.
Still, as she didn't expect to live the rest of her life in Mobliz, she was teaching Katrin what she knew as well. She didn't want to feel obligated to stay, should the opportunity to leave ever arrive.
She sighed as she looked out to the infamous (as she had learned) Veldt. Molbiz, she had been told, had been built to take advantage of the resources of the Veldt, at least until they had been effectively cut off from the rest of the world. Monsters and animals from all over the world, it seemed, migrated to the Veldt regularly, making it a hunter's paradise. Furthermore, many herbs and plants that these people used in their medicines grew far more plentifully here than anywhere else, it seemed.
Which led into a real mystery for her. These people didn't know anything about magic. The few things they did know indicated fear and distrust of it. And yet, many of the monsters (or Fiends, as the people called them) and plants they used were highly magical in nature. She'd only done so well as she had because it didn't take her long to figure out the basic principals behind the magical medicines they used.
She couldn't cast magic at the moment, but it seemed she knew how to use their own medications better than they did.
This also led to her current project.
Katrin, over her blush and now wearing a heavy apron, turned to Sylphiel. "So, id you discover anything new, yesterday?"
Sylphiel nodded. "I did stumble across something. Adding powdered Adamanchyt shell to a Tonic results in a drink that temporarily increases the toughness of skin. Could be very useful to hunters around here. On the other hand, it has to be consumed within a minute or so of mixing it, or it will lose all effect. Furthermore, the effect only lasts for about ten minutes, which limits any practical use."
Katrin shook her head. "Why do you bother with this, if it isn't really useful?"
Sylphiel just shook her head while smiling. "Don't you understand? If I can determine what, exactly, are the properties of the ingredients I would use, then I can predict what effect they will have when mixed. The one I came up with last night is a good example - it did exactly as I expected it to. It just doesn't keep well or last for long. In the future, I might find something else to add that can stabilize the potion in both ways."
Katrin just blinked at that explanation. It still went over her head, but Sylphiel hoped to change that, if she ever found that could really grab the younger girl's attention.
All together, she decided as she watched Katrin start the process of boiling down greens to make Tonics, it wasn't a bad life she'd found here. But she still hoped that some time, one of her friends would come to find her. Or that she'd find some other way to leave Mobliz behind...
Her thoughts were interrupted by the door to her hut being thrown open. "Miss Sylphiel! Miss Sylphiel!"
Sylphiel walked over to the agitated man. "What's wrong?"
Taking a few gulps of air to catch his breath, the man replied, "The hunting team found someone new, Miss Sylphiel. Looks like a soldier, must've gone over the Barren Falls, most likely. He's in mighty poor shape, Miss Sylphiel, you'd best come look at him straight away, if he's to have any chance at all..."
