They took care of amateurs butting into their territory, normally by sudden violence that usually wasn't fatal to begin with. Typical tactics would have resulted with Nabiki getting the first warning, then possibly a little accident occurring to her, and eventually (if she continued to be a problem) Nabiki would have quietly vanished.
Nabiki was warned but counted on her sister and father to take care of it, or perhaps a quiet word to the police if it got nasty. Things didn't go by the numbers though. Things escalated fast.
Akane found the darksuited men having a quiet "talk" with her sister to be a threat. There were three of them, one of her, and things might have still gone in normal fashion had Akane not beaten them as badly as she had.
There was another factor at work as well. The Triads had been trying to move into the area, and the Yakuza were fighting a war in the shadows. It was made worse by the fact that the Triads had people who weren't exactly normal traditional gangsters getting involved. This particular shadow war involved things that went bump in the night, magic of varying sorts, martial arts masters with sometimes bizarre arts, and so on. In order to hold their own, much less take back lost territory, the Yakuza were making deals with devils. More or less. So to speak.
Soun was gone. Possibly dead. Akane actually hoped he was. There were worse things that could have happened to him than merely dying.
This was because the Yakuza lord whose territory included Furinkan had recruited an ally in their war against the Triad, one who needed experimental subjects as both price for assistance and means of working out methods of battle. In fact, those with martial artist ancestry were especially prized for these experiments, as they might be sufficiently strong to survive them.
Akane knew this because she and her two sisters had survived. Of course, what the Yakuza had intended as their fates had an influence on the path the experiment had taken, as well as the experimenter's field of expertise. Which was why they were now:
