Ranma. Hired soldier of the Silvermoon Kingdom whose weapon skills and courage would have gotten him a much higher position by now if he'd ever learned not to snark off the chain-of-command. He'd served Silvermoon for almost a year and a half, done pretty darn well against bandit raids and wandering monsters, made some unexpected friends and enemies and such. Then the attack had come.
His squad had been pretty much slaughtered in the first minute. People he'd been joking with for months lying dead almost before they knew they were under attack. Ranma himself had gotten stunned, blasted by magical lightning so many times that his belt buckle seemed to be magnetic now. When he'd finally managed to quaff a Mega Medicine, the enemy had already moved on. Eventually he'd felt the spell slam down - some magical effect enveloping the entire nation - though he had a certain resistance to some magic that had helped him out there.
Ranma checked. The Princess Usagi. He'd ridden hard to the palace only to find everything changed. The Princess herself had been hidden in a closet when someone unleashed some major earthquake spell and brought the palace down around her.
Ranma had freed her, digging her out, and had managed to put together a room she could hide in. Princess Usagi had seen her kingdom destroyed, her mother and father killed, many of her populace dragged off as slaves or possibly worse.
More surprisingly, the troops (they were all wearing a uniform - so it was a guess) had been looking for some object of great magical power and then apparently unleashed that force against the nation of Silvermoon.
Princess Usagi, beloved of the kingdom, was a bit of a wreck now. Ranma, her last (as far as either of them knew at present) loyal soldier, had to make a decision for her. Which was what to do now.
