They had crossed over, and were now in a universe where HG Wells had not written a story called "War Of The Worlds" and there had never been a radio drama based on it.
Instead it was October 30, 1938 and the previous two days had seen something entirely unpleasant occur.
Tripods were currently marching through New England and utilizing "death rays" with wild abandon.
Unlike in the stories by HG Wells, these tripods were a little different. For one thing, they were environmentally secure. For another, there was a vast mechanism being built in upstate New York - whose sinister purpose was unknown to the humans. Not that they didn't have their hands full just trying to survive.
More attack craft were establishing "beachheads" elsewhere. England. Russia. China. Germany. Africa.
It was unlikely at present that World War II would ever occur. The Martians were doing a good enough job at exterminating humans that even if the Martians just keeled over the next day, mankind would have its hands full just recovering.
