“Can we trust him, mi’lady?” asked Haruka, as the trio slowly galloped back towards the Kingdom of Nerima.
Nabiki brought her horse to a stop, feeling better about discussing this with her guards in one location than among the countryside. “He may not seem it, but he is the one person I can trust above all else. I know he will never betray me of his own free will.”
“But what about us?” asked Michiru.
Nabiki shrugged. “I’ve known him much longer than you. All I know at the moment is that you will not betray me due to the fact it would expose your own secret as well. Those are not friends, and only the loosest of allies.”
“She is correct, Haruka,” said Michiru.
“Doesn’t mean I like it.”
“We are not in such a situation where that matters,” said Nabiki. “The Dark Kingdom is making inroads with the surrounding kingdoms, forming alliances based off power and their desires of the Demon Queen. I myself am a likely target for them both before and after Prince Jadeite is married to my sister. My father is all but useless, caring only about his own petty desires of power and control; too much so to see what is really happening. My younger sister is almost as bad an enemy as the Dark Kingdom. And the only ally we might have had was taken out before they even knew what hit them. So tell me, why should I trust you so explicitly?”
The girls looked thoroughly embarrassed.
“Now that we have that out of the way,” said Nabiki, “the reason I trust him so is because I know him, perhaps better than he knows himself. I know he will never break under torture, and will kill himself in a moment’s notice if he believes they might use others to try and break him. I know he is fiercely loyal to those he trusts, and he may be our best chance against the eventual corruption of the lands by Beryl and Metallia.
“Does that answer the question of if he can be trusted.”
The two guards stayed silent.
“He can do it, I know so,” she said, turning back slightly to look at the direction of the small cabin that had been their liaison point. He has to, because I don’t know if I could go on if he passed on beyond the veil.
“So you will take care of me?” asked the frail girl, huddled closely against Ranma.
He smiled down towards her as his horse galloped back to the citadel. “I promise. I will try and protect you with my last breath.”
“Are you my new papa?”
Ranma looked a bit confused, before he smiled. “Yeah; I’ll be your new papa. Of course, that means I’ll have to make you eat your vegetables.”
“Yuck.”
“No argument here,” smiled Ranma, as they continued on their way.
