Gosunkugi’s magic lessons went well, as expected, but by the end his instructor noticed that something was a bit off. “You seemed distracted tonight. Is something on your mind?”
“Well… yeah. You see, I, uh, asked Akane out…”
“And what did she say?”
“Um, she agreed.”
“Well, there you go! You’ve got a date with your dream girl, and you didn’t even need to use any magic. Wouldn’t you agree that this way is better?”
“Uh, I guess.”
“Good. Now, when is this date of yours?”
“Um, tomorrow evening.”
Max gave his student a knowing smile. “Ah, so it’s pre-date jitters, then.”
“Well, kinda.”
“Don’t worry about it; I’m sure you’ll do fine. How’s your rose trick coming?”
“Um, pretty good, I guess.”
“Show me.”
Gosunkugi made a slight gesture, causing a rose to appear in his hand—which he immediately dropped, as one of its thorns had materialized right into his thumb.
“Still needs some work, I see. Ah, well, it’s not that important—you can save that trick for later, when you need to create a romantic mood. What do you have planned for the actual date?”
“Uh, well, I was thinking we could see a movie, then maybe have dinner somewhere…”
Max nodded his head before giving his advice: “Dinner first, then the movie. Movies don’t give you much chance for personal interaction, and you want as much of that as possible at the beginning of your date.”
“Why?”
“Because conversation is an active exchange of information, while in a movie theater, you just receive information from the screen—unless, of course, you’re just planning on using the darkness in the theater for some really interactive activities….”
“Uh, no. Akane probably wouldn’t appreciate that.” And when your date knows multiple ways to bend, fold, spindle, and mutilate the human body, you don’t take things to “the next level” until you’re damn sure she’s ready.
“Well, even if that was what you were planning, that would only make getting dinner first more important—if you mess that up, and then the whole night’s pretty much shot.”
Gosunkugi tried to phrase what he was about to say as carefully as he could. “Uh, Max, as much as I appreciate your advice, that’s really not what I’m concerned with at the moment….”
Max raised an eyebrow at this. “Well, then would you care to explain your predicament?”
One lengthy explanation later, Max sighed. “You know, I was wondering how long it would take you to realize that you hadn’t entirely solved your problem with this moron.”
“You knew about Kuno?”
“No, but in my day job, I have to deal with a lot of idiots, and experience has told me that most stupid people are stupid the same way.”
“So what should I do?”
“Well, I’m going to have to learn more about this Kuno fellow before I can give you a long term solution, but for the immediate future, I suggest that you and this girl go on your date someplace where people won’t expect you to go.”
“Okay… but where?”
Max was going to recommend that his protégé do some research and come up with his own answer, but suddenly an idea came to him—one that would serve his purposes as well as Gosunkugi’s. “How about Juuban? It’s not too far out of the way, there are several places to eat in your price range, and most importantly, nobody will have any reason give any attention to your date.”
The teenager thought about this for a while before responding, “That sounds like a good idea… thanks, Max. I’ll see you next time.”
“You’re welcome—and I’ll work on a more permanent solution to your problem as well.” Anthracite transported himself back to his office before he delivered the smirking finish to that comment: “But first, I need to take care of some business.”
