There was a great deal of confussion. Pandas were an endangered species so you don't expect to find one wandering around a zoo. Especially not one wearing a gi and kidnapping deranged children.
The girl had to be deranged, insisting as she was that she was a boy, that the panda was her father and that her ring could summon a genie. So the keepers smiled, nodded while the girl rubbed her ring furiously, then called social services to take the kid off of their hands.
The panda was obviously trained, but a call to the Chinese circus
that had opened in Nerima, or to the local excentrics, hadn't
produced any results. Failing to find an owner the zoo decided not
to look a gift horse panda in the mouth.
The trouble with breeding pandas in captivity was getting them interested in each other. Pandas, it seemed, were very fussy about who they dated. The zoo's new vetenary, Doctor Misu Ono, had proposed a radical solution: a combination of moxibustion, shiatus, accupuncture and ancient herbal remedies, similar to those used by a family of sumo pig breeders for managing their animals, to 'get the happy couple in the mood'.
