“Pop! No!” Ranma refused. “You can’t let her have Saturn! She’ll do bad things to her!”
Genma snorted angrily and tried to tug the ring off of the boy’s finger. It refused to budge.
Ranma’s eyes lit up with understanding. “You can’t just take it from me!” he reasoned, remembering the stories that … some other red-haired woman used to tell him. “I have to give it up by my free will and I’m not gonna!”
Beryl’s expression hardened. “Don’t be too sure of that, Boy. You will release the ring, or I will kill you! Or perhaps I will just turn you into an animal too. How would you like to be a cat? Or a little piglet. Maybe a duck. I like roast duck almost as much as pork!” She raised her hand. “Neptune Sea Change!”
“Silence Wall!” Saturn cried weakly from where she lay. The barrier started to form between Ranma and the cascade of enchanted water.
Beryl glared furiously at the little Genie, then her attention was drawn to the cries of alarm outside the tent. Genma’s arrival, and the sounds from inside, had drawn too much attention. She raised her hand high and declared, “very well, I shall leave you to think things over. Genie Teleport!”
“Saturn? Are you okay?” Ranma asked in concern.
“I’ll be fine,” the little girl coughed weakly. “I just have to return to the ring to recharge!” He form dissolved into a violet energy cloud that beamed into the ring’s stone.
Genma growled in disgust at his son’s sentimentality, flung the boy over his shoulder and strode out of the tent. He stopped to stare at the gathering crowd and perspired as they cried, “escaped animal!” Then he saw the zookeepers converge on the site and he took off as fast as his panda legs could carry him.
