Coup De Vitesse - a martial arts style that had been learned OF by a treecat and by a single old man who was simply trying to survive in an age long before he'd even been born.
Genma helped the old man survive, knowing only this old man had a powerful martial arts style.
In fact, the old man - who would never give his real name - only the title 'Sergeant' - was a Master of SIX styles that Genma had never heard of.
The major one being the aforementioned Coup De Vitesse.
Genma learned it. He learned the other styles too, each addressing a different special niche. It was the speed, strength, and sheer vitality of the Coup which drew him. The Sergeant was tough, fair, and knowledgable about a great many things besides the Art. Genma learned more than he thought he had.
Something was wrong with the Sergeant though. He seemed weakened on many occasions, in levels of pain that gradually increased, and distracted more and more frequently.
When the Sergeant finally died years later, he had already met Ranma and been a "godfather" to the boy.
Kraken, the six-limbed empathic treecat associate of the Sergeant, lived longer. He had been guardian and companion to the boy living under his care. When Kraken finally passed on himself, buried in a plot where celery was planted, Ranma's were not the only wet eyes.
