Years of pain and humiliation had Soun hating Genma as much as suffering under the same Master might have made them closer. Every night he was caught or chased or had to pay for his Master's excesses was another cause to envy Genma's freedom.
One night, deep in his training under Happosai, suffering from an outraged group of women villagers - he vowed vengeance against Genma for his "betrayal" as he now thought of it. Vengeance would come when HIS Heir defeated Genma's Heir, destroying the other's school and demonstrating how all this pain had actually been worth it.
Still, he remained reticient just as he might have been about a marriage arrangement. His wife died and his dojo fell into disuse. Things remained the same in many respects.
As for Genma, he had gone on to find and study an advanced martial art and eventually teach his son and heir. That style of martial art being:
