"Red Goo", indeed. Ikari Shinji knelt down next to the red lapping waves, and halfheartedly poked at the sand.
"Say."
"Hmmmmmm?"
Asuka Langley looked at the red sea, eyes empty. She was done with crying, now.
"Why do we keep doing this? I mean, we always try and it never works out and we always say never again - but then we always end up trying it again, next Cycle. - Why?"
Asuka sighed, then, looking at the waves.
"Because trying to breed with one's own Shadow-Selves - just doesn't work out, in the long run? All we keep getting are Children who are just like ourselves, for better or for worse. And that just isn't good, in the long run. There's a reason most Lifeforms like to mix up genetic matter every once in a while, you know."
Shinji sighed.
"And so we try to breed with each other, and it never works out, and we end up tearing each other to bits. And the World along with us, to boot."
"And then we storm off in different directions swearing "Never again" at the top of our lungs, don't forget that part."
Asuka laughed. Shinji looked at her, somewhat oddly.
"Say, Lilith? Did you notice? - We're still talking to each other, this time."
Asuka blinked.
"So we are, Adam. That is... interesting."
The two looked at the lapping red waves for a while. It was Shinji who first stood up, and walked out on to the sea.
"Behold me, for I walk on water!"
Asuka giggled, blearily.
"You're walking on red goo, silly - Hey, c'mon, wait for me now..."
The two walked out on top of the endless red waves.
"Say, Lilith - It really wasn't too bad this time, was it?"
Asuka sniffed.
"Talk for yourself, idiot. I was catatonic a whole lot of the time, remember? And don't even mention all my poor Shadow-Selves..."
"Ew, don't say that, I'm going to start remembering mine. So, uh, um - "
"Ummmm?"
"Do you want to try it again?"
Asuka looked at him. Hard.
"You know, I've been thinking about this - Maybe we're trying too hard. Baby steps might be good."
Asuka sighed.
"A practice run, you mean?"
"Well, maybe. Or maybe something like a practice date, or something. Is there such a thing as a practice date?"
Hmmmmmmm.
Asuka thought about this for a good long while.
And then, smiled. And took Shinji's hand.
The red goo was veryconvenient to have around, at times like this.
And two voices harmonized -
