Two figures floated between the two, serene.
"You know, Ryouji? Once upon a time, things were simpler. D'you remember?"
The man who had been known as Kaji Ryouji only nodded.
"Of course, Misato. Or should it be Rei, now?"
Katsuragi Misato shrugged, melting and transforming into the girl known as Rei.
"Whichever, Kaoru-kun. I don't mind - they're all me anyway, after all."
"Too true."
Kaji whispered, melting into "Nagisa Kaoru", AKA "Tabris".
"But Eva - things change. They do. It looks like it always ends up full circle, but - "
"Of course it does, Serpent dearest. Like a spring-coil, you know? Or a helix. It looks like it's going back to the starting point, when you look at it from the top, but it isn't. Not really."
Kaji/Kaoru sighed.
"I wish things would stay the same, sometimes."
Misato/Rei looked at him, her smile bittersweet.
"Oh, so do I. But it's not to be. Things shouldn't be static, anyway. - Even if They did make Us to be their Shadows."
Kaji/Kaoru looked at her.
"Shadow-Selves, helpmeets, mates, created from blood and tears and ribs and only the Universe knows what else - except we couldn't really be their mates. Not really, not truly -"
"But we've known that for a long time, Serpent."
"Yes, we did, Eva my sweet. - Even if They didn't. We couldn't help knowing it."
We're Them, after all...
Kaji/Kaoru and Misato/Rei looked at each other for a long moment, then.
"You noticed?"
"That They haven't stormed off to separate corners of the World, screaming "Never again!" yet? Yes I did."
"They're... actually talking to each other."
"Yes They are, aren't They?"
Misato/Rei smiled. After a moment, so did Kaji/Kaoru.
"They seem to have decided on a rematch. Or - maybe a different game?"
"Something different, maybe. They really might have been trying too hard, you know."
"Hmmmm."
Kaji/Kaoru put out his hand, then. Misato/Rei looked at it for a moment, before taking it.
