When facing what seemed to be an unsurmountable problem, Shinji Ikari's first reflex had always been to run away. He didn't want all the responsibilities, pain and pressure of being an EVA pilot.
So when a seemingly genuine arabian genie gave him a wish, he decided to get out of this cursed world once and for all. Of course his phrasing could have been a lot better...
Shinji all but screamed what he wanted "I wish I was sent to the world of... that old american TV show Kensuke showed me last week ! I believe its name was..." It had looked nice.
There was a flash of light and he heard Mihoshi say "Wish granted !". When he opened his eyes, he was... elsewhere !
Too bad Kensuke had only showed him a nice episode. Shinji didn't know the series he was in would turn darker soon.
