ID4: The Harvest [Episode 170605]

The discs looked like miniature flying saucers; each no larger than a ten yen piece and about a quarter as thick as that at the hub’s widest.  The objects drifted lazily over the city, like a glittering swarm of sliver butterflies, for several minutes after the blaze of light that had scattered them far and wide turned itself off.

Nervous people slowly came out of hiding; the little objects seemed harmlessly cute and tinkled like silver bells.  The little saucers mostly ignored them except to avoid a few tentative prods.  Emboldened, more people emerged to investigate their charming appearance

That was when the things turned active, and darted at any person within range to latch onto their foreheads like limpets.  The zombiefication process was completed almost immediately.  The victim's eyes would close, and a glowing robotic lens would flare open on the limpet module’s hub.

Some people tried to help their friends, neighbours, classmates, or coworkers, only to be grabbed by them and held immobile for their own enslavement.  Others fled or tried to hide, and the swarm began to hunt and seek.  A small portion of the zombified victims seemed to be recruited to help with the hunt; the rest calmly undressed, left their clothes in neatly folded bundles, then walked unconcerned in parade formation to gather at the nearest park or courtyard to await in rigid attention for … something else to happen.

Once the flow of enslaved population ceased, and it seemed determined that no more would be found in hiding, tubular vessels were dispatched to each of gathered crowds in turns.  Once ramps were lowered before each, the zombified gathering marched on board with militaristic precision.

The entire harvest took little over an hour.  The ships remained in ominously silent vigil over the depopulated cities, then…
