Those in the know saw the mile-wide saucers hovering over major cities and took one of two courses of action. One was to welcome the aliens who were obviously more civilized and had better technology, who would then usher in a new Golden Age of peace and prosperity.
The other was to pack everything you could and get the hell out of town.
In New York, someone had discovered the piggybacked countdown that was conveniently in base-10 and even using something very close to Windows OS (Windows 98 to be exact).
The big alien ships didn't deign to speak to the humans buzzing around it, they merely came out in what they had determined to be major cities.
