"I thought you were talking about a weapon system," said Ranma, his silvery eyes looking around the room. To his eyes, he could see shadowy shapes of physical objects - usually with the muted browns or greens of nonliving matter. Things fashioned from earth elements were brown, things fashioned from plants and such were in shades of green to a light dead-grass yellow. Living auras though - they were alive in all sorts of colors. He'd gotten better in the past few years, able to see the emotions and inner light of someone's soul. In contrast both nature spirits and ghosts tended to be simpler patterns.
"This is a weapons system," said Father Ohara. "It was made -"
"She," corrected Ranma.
"Well, it's shaped like a 'she'," admitted Father Ohara.
"She has a spirit, very little aura, simple pattern," said Ranma, trying to read the various patterns. "Very dim though."
Priest Hino chuckled. "So she's got a spirit, not a soul?"
"She's more like a brownie or pixie," said Ranma. "Hard to tell while her lights are dim like this."
"This unit is a reconstructed Steel Angel, some project the Japanese government had put together during World War I," said Father Ohara. "Taking the notes from another location, we've built her up - but we're still assessing all this."
"The pattern is broken," said Ranma, pointing. "There's a gap here. Something needs to fill it."
"He's pointing at her lips. Perhaps like the old legends of the golem?" asked Rabbi Watanabe.
"I don't think so," said Priest Hino. "More like a sleeping princess?"
"You recovered her during the earthquake?" asked Ranma.
"The original chassis was never finished," said Rabbi Watanabe. "Some of the parts were beyond anything we would have expected from that time period. Just the artificial skin was more than anticipated."
"What's her name?" asked Ranma.
Priest Hino smiled at the boy, meeting that silvery gaze without flinching. "It's-"
