The white dwarf sun was actually maintained by the existing machinery. The atmosphere had degraded significantly as well, and the lifeforms that had inhabited this outpost had been significantly different from human.
Six billion years had passed since the last of this civilization had gone, a Type III civilization that had been able to manipulate the laws of the universe itself.
The computer wasn't QUITE a computer but more an approximation of one. It was not self-aware in a human sense, nor able to react in more than preset manners. A life form was on the planet and was about to perish.
Automatic systems went into play. The life form remained essentially the same, but was now able to survive the crash that destroyed the ship around him. He had been altered so that the flames and heat of re-entry failed to scorch him. He had been changed so that the 12g environment did not crush him. He could see through the murk of the polluted atmosphere and exist despite there being insufficient oxygen to nourish his cells.
The temperature of the planet was too cold for human survival. Plant, animal, and even microbial life had all long since vanished from the world.
Ranma was unaware of this. Only that he had somehow survived the fiery plunge, the crash, and now stood on an alien world where he could see nothing outside of himself that lived.
