The thunderstorm shook the small boat around, and the sea was restless as well. Several times an especially big wave crashed down onto the ship's deck.
The ship was on its way to Cinnabar Island when it was hit by the storm. As there was no warning from the weather institute, it came totally unexpected. While the crew of the small ferry tried to cope with the situation as best as they could, the captain advised the passengers to stay in their cabins.
But one certain young Pokémon trainer from Pallet Town didn't listen to reason, as he tried to find his best friend.
The rainy wind whipped around the hood of his blue raincoat while he hold on tightly on the ship's rail. "Pikachu!" he shouted. "Pikachu, where are you?"
"Come back inside, Ash!" Misty yelled from the door. "The captain said the storm is getting worse."
"I'm not coming inside until I found Pikachu," Ash Ketchum insisted, not even looking back at his female travel companion.
"But are you even certain he's out there?" Misty shouted against the storm's noise.
"I looked everywhere," Ash yelled. "He has to be here... PIKACHU!!"
He continued to slowly advance to the front of the deck, where several crates were bound tightly to the deck. Perhaps Pikachu had hid between them?
Misty sighed. "I hope Ash knows what he's doing... if the storm is getting worse, it will be even more dangerous out there..."
Just then, a yellow little Pokémon appeared next to her. "Pika Pi!"
"Pikachu!" Misty said in surprise. "Where have you...? Never mind that now! ASH! Come back! Pikachu's here, everything's fine!"
Ash turned around his head and said something, but Misty couldn't understand him, as he was too far away. But when he saw his old buddy next to her, she could see a grin forming on his face, and he came back.
Misty let out a breath of relief. Sometimes, that boy could be so stubborn...
"PIKA!!" Pikachu suddenly yelled, pointing outside.
Misty gasped. "Ash, watch out behind you!"
Ash turned around in confusion. His eyes got wide as he saw the enormous wave crashing down on the ship's deck... and on him!
Then everything went dark!
----
The Seafoam Islands, the next morning...
As the rays of the early morning sun broke through the clouds, the waves gently hit the border of the twin island just a small distance away from Cinnabar Island.
A glittering, blue shape flew through the air, leaving a trail of cool snowflakes behind. Everyone who would be near the islands today would be amazed of the rare sight, as one of the Legendary Pokémon circled above the ocean.
Articuno was glad the storm was over. She never liked the dark, violent side of nature. She guessed it had been Zapdos again... the last time they saw each other, they were arguing about something trivial... And she guessed Zapdos was still upset, so perhaps the thunder bird had sent a little thunderstorm to her favorite islands to tick her off.
Articuno gently landed on one of the island's mountain peaks, which got instantly covered in snow. It was always nice to come back here, to her birthplace, just for a few days of vacation. The place she was supposed to guard - Ice Island, near the Orange Archipelago - could endure a few days without its guardian.
Just then, her gaze fell down to the shore of Western Seafoam Island. Was it just her imagination, or did she see something moving in the water?
She gasped as she realized it was a human... a boy, doubtlessly washed up by the storm this night. She spread her wings again. She rarely showed herself to humans, but she had to make sure this boy was okay.
So she flew down towards the shore.
----
Ash groaned as he slowly opened his eyes. "Wh... where am I?"
He sat up and looked around. He was lying in a bed inside some natural cave. It's walls were sparely decorated, with only few other furniture including a table, a wardrobe and some chairs. Some beautiful crystal formations were attached to one wall. He could hear the sounds of the ocean from outside.
Ash stood up. He realized that he was dressed in some sort of bathrobe. He could see his clothes hanging on a clothesline in front of the cave.
He walked outside and looked around. He was standing on a rocky beach, and behind him, a big mountain rose out of the sea.
"Is this... Seafoam Island?" he murmured.
Suddenly, he heard someone approaching. As he turned around, he was facing a cute-looking girl with short, blue hair. She was dressed in some sort of white and blue fuku, which was decorated with blue feathers. "Ah, I see you're awake! How do you feel?"
He rubbed the back of his head. "Um... fine, I think! Who are you? What happened?"
The girl smiled. "I found you unconscious on the shore this morning. I guess you have been washed up by the storm last night. You've been very lucky! And you can call me..." She hesitated, as if she had to think about it first.
"Ami. I'm Ami."
Ash nodded. "Nice to meet you, Ami! I'm Ash! Ash Ketchum!"
He looked deeply into her cerulean blue eyes, and when she looked back, they felt something deep inside them. A warm feeling that was slowly spreading through their hearts...
Was this love at first sight?
