This was the Gensosuikoden World, or the World Of Runes. It was the kingdom of Siryon, which was marked on maps as part of a group of "Nameless Kingdoms" by those more established kingdoms. Ranma was the son of the king, who'd been a merchant more than anything else.
The native Ranma had been a Rune Mage sent to study abroad and had returned when word of the kingdom being destroyed had reached him.
Siryon's main exports were aromatic woods and fruit. It was not the sort of place one would expect agents of a far mightier kingdom, operating under loose orders to bring back anything of value regarding unique Runes, to destroy. That was what had happened however, and now the people had been rounded up and sent to slave pens.
With the Ten Gates Rune, Ranma had some chi abilities. Some were very similar to what he'd had. Some were entirely new.
The native Rei was a priestess of the Temple Of The Dawn Fire.
Currently, Ranma and Rei were burning the bodies of those who'd been at the temple when the forces of Holy Harmonium had raided the place.
It was quiet, solemn, and not exactly pleasant work. Still, it was necessary for a number of reasons.
Ranma glanced every so often at Rei, wondering if she were one of the "108 Stars" he was supposed to gather.
Rei glanced every so often at Ranma, wondering if he was who she thought he was.
When the job was done, Rei lit the fire with an application of will and a pulse from her Rage Rune. Then she contemplated the fire, looking for answers in its depths.
Granddaughter
Rei startled, seeing her grandfather's image in the flames. "Grandpa?"
Granddaughter, go with him.
Rei focussed her will on the flames, framing a question.
Yes, it is he. The prince who went to study Rune Magic. It is also not he, but... it's complicated.
Rei's eyes narrowed, trying to figure out that answer.
He has studied his Arts and knows little of the world, and he knows little of the kingdom he must rebuild. He will need counsel.
Rei nodded, getting that. Also getting a puzzled look from Ranma who didn't hear anything except what Rei said.
And if you get me a few grandkids to watch down upon, that would be even better.
"GRANDPA!" yelped a shocked Rei, blushing even more at the startled look Ranma was giving her.
Well, he IS a prince you know. How closely you work depends on you. Just a suggestion. Ah, well, time to go now.
"Wait, grandfather," said Rei, ignoring Ranma for now. "Should we rebuild the temple?"
Eventually, yes. Right now you've other concerns. Head... west. There is one who needs your help.
"West? No more details than that?" asked Rei.
Oh, leave an old man to his rest will you? After all that, I think I deserve it.
Rei nodded and bowed, though still a bit miffed at the insinuations. "Goodbye grandfather."
Ranma scratched his head, wondering what all that was about.
