Sailor Articuno: The master's student [Episode 173145]

by Shritistrang

After Ash challenged Ryu to a fight, the martial arts gym leader thought about it. Then he said: "I'll accept the challenge for a Belt Badge... but I won't fight you myself. You're showing great promises and I believe you'll be a great trainer some day... but you still have a long way ahead of you. Frankly, I don't think you would be able to defeat me now."

"I see..." As sighed.

"But I give you the chance to earn the Belt Badge by defeating one of my students," Ryu added. "Mamoru will be your opponent in this fight. Do you agree, Mamoru?"

The black-haired boy stood up, as well as his Machop. "Yes, sensei!"

"Machop!"

Ryu smiled. "Then it's settled... the duel will begin in 15 minutes, in the gym's arena. I will be the judge myself... Meet me there!"

After Ryu left, Mamoru stood up as well and left the room. Ash stared after him. "Is he... always that silent?" he asked.

Sakura shrugged. "Most of the time. I don't really know why he wanted Ryu to train his Pokémon in the first place, but I think there is a bigger story behind it."

"Anyways, if Mamoru uses Fighting Pokémon like his master, I think I'll just use Pidgeotto..."

"True, Machop is Mamoru's main fighter," Sakura nodded. "But he also has several other Pokémon that aren't Fighting-types. So be careful which of your own Pokémon you use."

"Okay... this is gonna be a more challenging fight, then. It's getting boring anyway, fighting the same type of Pokémon every time I'm in a gym. I'm going to win this one."

"We'll stand on the sidelines and cheer you on," Misty said.

Ami nodded. "Yes! I'll be there for you, too!"

Ash smiled back at her. "Thanks, Ami... guys... Now, let's not let them wait, huh?"

"Pika!" His buddy shouted in excitement.

----

A short time later, Mamoru and Ash were standing in front of each other in the big arena of the gym.

"This is a 3 on 3 fight for the Cinnabar Island Belt Badge," Ryu shouted. "The fight ends after three battles. The trainer winning two of those three rounds will win. Are you ready?"

Both fighters nodded.

"Good. Fight!"

"I'll choose... Kunzite!" Mamoru shouted and threw a Pokéball.

"Scyyyyy!"

Ash smirked. "A Scyther, huh? Not a Fighting-type, but a strong opponent. All right, then I'll choose Squirtle!" He let out the little turtle Pokémon.

"Squirtle!"

"Squirtle, we'll start this with a Water Gun!"

"Squirtle!" Squirtle nodded and fired a stream of water at the green bug Pokémon.

"Kunzite, combine Quick Attack with Slash!"

"Scyyyyyther!" The Scyther named Kunzite rushed forward using the speed of his Quick Attack, and at the same time, cut through the jet of water with his claw-like hand.

"What?" Ash stared as the Scyther cut through the water as if it were butter. Not even getting himself wet, he rushed at the still spraying Squirtle.

"Quick, Squirtle! Use Withdraw!"

Squirtle stopped using the Water Gun and withdrew into his shell just in time as Kunzite's claw slammed into him.

The Scyther jumped back. "You may have protected him, but the Slash still hurt him a little," Mamoru smirked. "And you still didn't manage to hit Kunzite."

"Just you wait," Ash shouted. "We're not done yet! Squirtle, Skull Bash!"

"Squir!" He came out of his shell and pushed himself off the ground with his feet. Headfirst, he flew at the Scyther like a living projectile.

"Defend yourself with Fury Cutter," Mamoru commanded.

As Kunzite obeyed, his claws turned into a flurry of swipes, as he tried to hit the incoming Squirtle.

"Now stop and use Bite!" Ash said.

And suddenly, Squirtle dropped to the ground just before he hit Kunzite. He opened his jaws and bit down on the Scyther's arm.

"Scyyyy," the bug Pokémon screeched in pain.

"What?" Mamoru shouted in surprise. "How did he manage to stop his Skull Bash in mid-air?"

"Now finish him off with Water Gun!"

"Squiiiiirrrrttle!" Hitting the confused Scyther with his water jet, Squirtle pushed him back on the ground.

Ryu watched closely, then nodded. "Scyther is unconscious. Squirtle won this round."

"All right!" Ash cheered. "We'll win this match!"

Mamoru raised Scyther's Pokéball. "Kunzite, return!" In a flash of light, the Scyther got pulled back into the ball. Mamoru smiled "You're good, Ash... but our fight has just begun! Now I choose... Nephrite!"

This time, it was a humanoid, yellow Pokémon holding a spoon that appeared.

"Kadaaaabra!"

Ash gulped. He clearly remembered fighting Sabrina's Kadabra in Saffron City... and this time, he had no Haunter with him. If he was lucky, this Kadabra wasn't as strong as Sabrina's...

"Okay... Squirtle, return!" He called back his water Pokémon. "Let's see..." he murmured. "I have no type that would have an advantage over a Psychic... I should use someone powerful then. Okay, I got it. I choose... Charizard!"

When the red fire-dragon appeared, he let out a roar.

"He's using Charizard?" Misty groaned. "I can see it again, he won't obey him..."

"Ash must be a good trainer if he can take care of a Charizard," Ami said.

"Well, most of the time Charizard decides not to obey Ash and takes a nap instead," Brock replied. "I hope that he won't do it this time..."

"Kadabraaa!" Nephrite brandished his spoon to threaten Charizard.

"Charizard, I know you can beat him," Ash shouted. "Now, use your Flamethrower!"

Charizard growled.

Mamoru was sweating. A Charizard was a powerful opponent. He wasn't too sure if Nephrite would be able to protect himself from such powerful fire attacks.
