So, it was perfectly understandable as to why he didn't know why that sign had read as it had. He couldn't have known that, due to their advances in technology, China and Rome had grown to immense power and wealth over the centuries. China had expanded out onto the steppes, up north into the tundra, and out to the east. The Romans had stretched their boarders to the west and the south. And those two nations had worked together to establish the 'Silk Road' as a major highway to transport goods, services, and people in relative safety and comfort.

What was worse was that he didn't know anything about the effects that travelling between dimensions had. Journeying like he had was not something for the faint of heart to do, and they had passed by, and through, a number of energy fields, all of which were not simple little things.
That was why he didn't know about what changes those fields had given him. He didn't even see a reason to check it out, as he hadn't been aware that there was something to look for. With the influence of those powers, there were all sorts of ways that the human body could be 'changed'.
