However, some kids didn't need that sort of place, as they still had a home to go back to. Individuals such as a girl named Usagi Tsukino had proven that it wasn't necessary to consolidate all the children into one place. Like Ranma, young Usagi seemed to be able to repel the fog just by using her presence. She apparently had some light about her that made the creatures of the dark unwilling to come near her if they were of a low enough level, and the powerful ones seemed to take note of her. Kids like her could stay with their parents as it looked like they were bearing some sort of natural defense against the evil.
That could not also be said for Mamoru Chiba, who came to the house after a rather bad experience. According to what was known, he had been in a car when the fog had unexpectedly rolled in. His parents had been killed in the resulting crash, with there being some sort of speculation that they had done so while trying to protect him. Unfortunately, the sole witness, Mamoru himself, had amnesia, and that meant that no one knew exactly what had happened. All that was known was that there had been scratch marks and holes in the car that simply could not have been caused by any natural accident.

His parents could have been dead, but given his family's propensity for getting lost, there was no way to be certain as to their true fate. And even if he was to claim the foster home as his home, he never really spent a lot of time there.
And they weren't the only ones, as various children not only gained abilities that they didn't even realize were special, while the fog brought twists to their lives that weren't all that nice. Not that all of them had to be directly involved, as some were affected like the boy who's mother died in front of him when a monster killed her in a quick attack, making him think that he'd caused her death. He had other family though, and stayed with them, as it was clear that they could take good care of him.
There was no shortage of people to be associated with the foster home though, including children. If they weren't directly staying there, they were in contact with that house, which made it a bit of a cross between a contact point and a focal point. It became something of a family in and of itself, and many of those who became involved with this odd family were also 'special' in their own ways.
Oddly enough, a lot of the children who met Ranma turned out to be female, including:
