Nabiki looked at Ranma, tiredly. Ranma looked back, gulping.
The not-so-sweet scent of 'bad news' was wafting in the air. It was getting to the point that he could almost actually smell it coming, actually...
Nabiki sighed, rubbing her eyes again.
"Alright, alright, there's no really good way to say it, so I'll just have to spit it out, I suppose... As it turned out, that ditz of a genie can't just exchange you and Shinji-kun again and fix stuff, for now. And it's not a matter of wording the Wish properly, either - it's just plain impossible, for the time being..."
Ranma blinked. "But - but what do you mean, we can't be switched back for the time being? It was Mihoshi-san's Wish - well, the Wish she gave you - that sent me here and sent Shinji there in the first place, right?"
"Yes, right, but - once you got placed here and Shinji-kun got placed at our world, well, things became - different. Look, I'm not sure how to explain this, but according to that genie, or more like some other people she called up to ask stuff and such - you do know that everything in the world is connected to everything else, right? So the things you do affect other people and things, and then the things they do affect another people and things, visa versa, and so on and so on."
Ranma nodded warily, wondering what this was leading too.
Nabiki sighed, and continued. "Well as things turned out, it seems that Wishes and stuff like that are the same way - everything's connected to everything else, like this big wide spiderweb or something. And as things turned out, it seems that you being placed in Shinji- kun's world and Shinji-kun being placed in ours is - was? - sort of part of a lot of other Wishs...and now there's this whole Wish-web thing, making you stick fast to Shinji-kun's world and making him stick to ours. Do you get me so far?"
Ranma thought about it. "...So Mihoshi-san's Wish just can't exchange us again, because...the Wish-web thing is stronger then any of her Wishs?"
Nabiki sighed. "Well actually, it's not just the Wish-web thing, lots and lots of other factors are involved, including all that mess with the Evangelions in the world you're in now, as you can probably guess already, but...let's just say that she'd probably be smushed like a fly on a car window if she even tried to grant a Wish that just switched you back. And that's not the worst thing that can happen in that case, not by a long shot - it's actually possible that both world would end up being devastated, or even sort of start melting into each other, or something even worse..."
Ranma gulped, yet again. "M-m-melting into each other? You mean, our world and the Eva-world could..."
Nabiki nodded, grimly. "End up melting into one world. - Or worse."
That sounded...bad. Very bad. Ranma grabbed his head, groaning.
Nabiki sighed yet again. "Actually, things are so potentially perilous that a genie Mihoshi's level wouldn't normally even go near somebody who's in your current - situation, if I understand things correctly. And I'm pretty sure I do in this case, because - well, as things turned out, Urashima-san is this really nice guy, and once I sat him down and talked things over, and it became pretty clear that most of his problems really didn't need a magic Wish to be solved at all, actually, he said he'd use his Wish on my behalf, since I seemed to need it more then he did. And so I spent a couple of hours more ironing out what that Wish should be, because, well, I wanted to be able to give you good advice this time...and well, here I am."
Nabiki grinned a little, then. "The Wish Urashima-san made for me ended up being sorta complicated, but anyway, the main point of this all was to try to do something that had a good chance of improving the entire situaion and not make it worse, if you get my meaning. So now I'm here to try to give you some advice, but to be able to deal with things like this, one has to be able to do lots of stuff, and fast at that, you know. It was a bit tricky to make the wording so it was all part of one Wish, too, but I managed that, too, so..."
Ranma blinked, and blinked again, thinking about this. "Oh, so you worded things so that, um, you'd be able to figure out things and give good advice even more quickly and better from now on, or something like that?"
Nabiki smiled, mock-modestly. "Welll...let's just say, if you thought I was good at solving problems before - heh, heh, heh. - I'm sort of beginning to seriously consider becoming a lawyer now, actually... I mean, I always was a bit interested in it, but..."
Ranma smiled a bit. Oh, that was Nabiki, alright - what did that old saying go, about people who would managed to get some profit even from tripping and falling? Well, that saying was made for people like Nabiki...
