"No, no, NO!" Kyle exclaimed, slamming both hands on the desk. The surprised clerk jumped, but Kyle paid him no heed, his head lowered. His shoulders shook, and when he spoke again, his voice sounded strained. "Oh, where have I gone wrong?" the Knight lamented. "Could my manly charm have been so overwhelming that it set that young, impressionable mind on the wrong path? Oh, to know such sorrow... how could I live with myself? How could I face your father, Lord Ferid? My shame is eternal...."
Though she still kept holding onto her brother, Lym graced the lamenting Knight with a disbelieving stare. "This is YOUR fault, Kyle?!"
Next to her, Lyon gathered her hands to fists, without seeming to notice it. She never spoke, but her glare conveyed volumes.
"Now, now," Miakis tried to calm them, but as their heads snapped to glare at her instead in eerie harmony, she jumped and let the scroll drop from her suddenly nerveless fingers. "Yeah, you've got lots of 'splaining to do, Kyle!" she said sternly, switching tracks in an instant and giving him her best angry look. Two others joined hers soon after, and she concealed a sigh of relief.
"This must be rectified!" Kyle exclaimed, and when he turned to look at the Prince, a wide look was present in his eyes. "Mere tavern wenches or taking you with me to peep on Miakis won't help this time! No, this calls for... Jeanne!" He rushed, and Faroush had a moment to appreciate why this young womanizer who would not be out of place on a movie set, had this world had them, was called one of the Queen's Knights. He made a startled movement, which only served to dislodge Lym, and then Kyle grabbed him and made a run for it.
There was a stunned silence, which was broken by Miakis's cry of, "Peeping on me?!" which set off a lengthy, angry tirade by Lymsleia which was loud enough to drown everything else.
Sialeeds palmed her forehead, shaking her head slowly. "They used to listen to him instead of jumping to conclusions, before. Then again, Faroush used to think more before he spoke, too...." She shook her head once more, and spared the frozen clerk a glance. "There is no need to mention this, is there?" she asked him sweetly. "And since only we are here, if rumors do start, we'll know straight away who was the source."
The clerk nodded frantically, drawing a handkerchief to wipe at his sweaty forehead.
