"And anyway, from what Nabiki-san told me, what you saw about me is probably more embarrassing then what I saw about you, anyhow. You are supposed to get into weird situations all the time - You're a Martial Arts Love Comedy main chara, after all..."
Ranma really stared, then. He couldn't help it.
He was a what?
Shinji sighed, eating another sweet cracker.
"Oh, come on, stop staring at me like that. From what Nabiki-san told me, what I am is the main protagonist of some kind of Giant Robot Horror Fantasy series or something. Compared to that... I mean, if I absolutely had to be the main chara of any anime or manga, why couldn't it be something like a School Romantic Comedy or something? Good-looking teachers, cute schoolmates, romantic tangles, friendships and rivalries..."
Ranma stared at him yet again, and decided to be very, very careful about mentioning the last two eps of the original Eva TV series.
But...
He was a Martial Arts Romantic Comedy Main Chara?
Ranma looked at Shinji again, and swallowed. Something was telling him doing this might be somewhat hazadoreous for his mental health...
But the pull of horrified curiosity was well-neigh irresistible.
"So, um, ...Shinji? What's this 'Ranma 1/2' all about, anyhow?"
About half an hour later, Ranma was sitting motionlessly with his face on the kotatsu table.
His life really was a Martial Arts Romantic Comedy.
"...Oh, come on, buck up, Ranma. I've already decided to think of the 'Eva with me' as an fiction vaguely based on me and my life and stuff like that - it makes things much easier to cope with, y'know?"
Ranma twitched. But. But...
...Well, OK. Ranma sighed, then. He should be used to utterly weird things in general by now, but sometimes, even he was thrown for a loop...
Oh. And on the other hand, there was something else he'd been wanting to ask Shinji about.
"Say Shinji. You did say you'd seen the first ep of Evangelion with me in it, right?"
"Well, yeah. Sorry I didn't get more, though - you want me to tell you about it?"
"Um...yeah?"
What was a little extra weirdness in his life, after all...
"Well, it starts out with you at m'uncle and aunt's house, actually - well, 'Ikari Ranma' with charas that look and sound like my uncle and aunt, I should say, I suppose. You're all eating breakfast together, and then auntie asks if you've packed everything already..."
Hmmm. Ranma didn't remember any scenes of Shinji setting off in that ep, but...
"So you - um, 'Ranma' says yes, and grumbles about my - um, his father a bit, trying to drag him out all the way to Tokyo-3 just with some E-mail and all. Auntie and Uncle smile at you and say you should try meeting him anyway, a boy should get to know his father sometime, and..."
Shinji looked a bit pensive then.
"They also said they'd keep your room the way it was for the time being, and if you wanted anything sent up to Tokyo-3 later, you, I mean Ranma, should just tell them. And then Auntie hugs you and says she'll miss you, and uncle says you can come back anytime if things don't work out, and - "
Shinji looked strangely glum. Ranma wondered why, till the brainstorm stuck.
"...Oh, ahhh..."
There was no way to properly ask this, even Ranma knew that.
"Well...they didn't say that to me, y'know, not like that anyway, with the hugs and all. ...Or maybe you don't? Was that even covered in the ep with me in it at all?"
"Errr...I don't think so..." Ranma mumbled.
"Well, they probably would take me back if things don't work out anyway, it's not like they'd throw me out on the streets I'd think, but..."
Shinji chewed his lip. Ranma had no idea what to say.
"And then Auntie goes to your room in the hanare, which is odd because she hardly ever comes to mine, but - Oh, you - I mean 'Ikari Ranma' - actually has a anime figurine collection. Just in case you didn't know."
Ranma blinked at that. No, what, wait -
" - You didn't?"
"Well, I did have two or three, I do admit, but not an entire shelf-full of them. Really, Ranma..."
Ranma groaned. What the heck?
Shinji grinned, then, his mood apparently slightly better.
"OK, and here is when it gets really odd - then 'Ranma' goes out to the graveyard at the nearby temple and goes and cleans up some gravestones, talking to them a bit. Which is odd, cause I don't usually do that, and it wasn't even the section where Auntie's relatives are.
- And then -"
