- And then -"
Shinji sighed again, then, reaching for yet another cracker.
Ranma waved his hand, trying to get his attention.
"Wait, wait - what is this about the...gravestones?"
"Well, you know, the usual, clean them up and burn incense and pray, that kind of thing. And you - um, 'Ikari Ranma' - actually talked to them, as well. I couldn't tell what you - he - was actually saying to them, though - it was supposed to be one of those mysterious things that the viewers figure out much later, I suppose. OK, and then, Ranma goes walking around town, talking to the people in shops and stuff - they're sort of familiar, too, since most of them are like the anime versions of the people I know, and most of them seem to know he's going to Tokyo-3, by the way, and most of them wish him well. And then some students come over, and they're basically like the anime version of some classmates I knew, too, except for a couple I didn't recognize at all - and some of them rib you - him - for being lucky enough to be going off to the big city, it seems. And then - "
Shinji sighed, then. Ranma looked at him.
"...Um. You didn't go around ...doing that stuff, either?"
"...No. Not quite." Shinji looked at the kotatsu table-top.
"...I...was, you know, wondering if I'd miss living there - I'd lived there most my life, after all - and did go around the shops and such, but...it wasn't like anybody knew I was going anyplace, I think. Or cared. - The obaa-chan at the courner tobacco-and-candy shop did me give me a extra bag of leftover candies and senbei when I told her, though. There wasn't anybody else I especially wanted to mention going off, so..."
Shinji sighed yet again, then. Ranma groaned inwardly.
"OK, OK, back to the anime Evangelion with you in it - Ikari Ranma, I mean. 'Ikari Ranma', oh boy, is that surreal, and what's even worse is that I'm getting used to saying it and thinking it, and - oh, whatever, whatever."
Shinji rubbed his eyes, sighing some more.
"OK, and then things take a turn for the weird for one Ikari Ranma, or for the weirder, I suppose. Somebody calls his name, and he looks back, and grins - and then, the scene shifts to Father and somebody he seems to know - Fuyutsuki-sensei, I think. ...Well, I mean anime charas that looks and sound like my father and Fuyutsuki-sensei, I supposed. They talk, and when the conversation's over, you can see that there's a photograph of somebody that looks like a young you - Ikari Ranma - and my mother on the table, beneath some other papers... And then a girl comes in, I think, but she isn't clearly shown..."
Ranma blinked. Wait...Ikari Gendo had photos of...
"And then the scene cuts away to a rather nice-looking lady sleeping and a penguin. I mean, I think it was a penguin. Weird. And then there's a couple of other short scenes showing other people, and then, it's back to Ranma, on a train with a backpack. He has a bandaid on his face that he didn't have before, and he winces a little when he moves, but he looks so-so happy, sort of. And then he gets off at a station, spends some time waiting in line for the security check - he must have something special, though, because the inspectors go a bit wide-eyed when they see his papers, and just wave him through. Some of them even call after him, though I couldn't get what they were saying, and then he's waiting by a street courner, eating ice cream. The scene cuts off to the same nice-looking lady in a blue car, though the penguin isn't there, tapping her feet - there's been some kind of traffic jam, it seems - and then..."
Ranma swallowed. "And then?"
"...Cometh the Angel." Shinji smiled at him, wanly.
" - That's what those things are called, right?"
