Setsuna's Fault: Old & New (DARK) [Episode 181915]

by Kestral

The Japanese Empire had never fallen, their customs and culture were intact.

They had rethought their plan for the 'Co-Prosperity Sphere' (which was where they conquered other nations, made their citizens slave under Japanese masters, and installed puppet governments to relay their orders) because a sizable chunk of military force had gone missing. Instead of blazing a path of glory, they had come to a slightly different approach. Smaller bites, digging in deep to each new section of territory, and then moving on.

The Northern School versus Southern School debate had been renewed, and going after Russia was still costly - but their forces didn't simply VANISH. This was an understandable activity, and the loss of soldiers was hardly of any concern anyway. Dying for the glory of Japan made for a hero, a samurai's ending. Death was lighter than a feather, duty heavier than a mountain.

Sailor Pluto knew that in this setting, there would be no 'sailor-suited warriors of love and justice' as neither concept was valued. Love was inconvenient and something that had to be channelled into appropriate venue. Justice was whatever an authority said it was. To be Japanese was to be human and creatures like those Koreans were meant to be used for the glory of the Empire.

Girls were supplied for the well-being and health of the soldiers, and what they thought of it was not a consideration. Women's roles were pretty much set in stone and only a few rose above such things, or were allowed to.

Kumori Mizuno was one of those. She showed competence as a physician, and had been placed as an Interrogation Officer in the Imperial Army. Of course, no Japanese would ever give voice to secret details on seeing their child being readied for torture. That was something only soft people of soft cultures did. When the Empire ran over an area, or found insurgents, it was Doctor Mizuno's job to get those secrets.

Ami Mizuno grew up in such an environment. It was her mother's dream to help produce an Empire where Japanese children could grow strong and tough and healthy. Hard workers for the Empire's future. Ami herself watched impassively on several occasions as her mother used thin knives on a child her own age, breaking the watching parent into confessing their crimes.

No, there would be little in the way of 'love' or 'justice' from Sailor Mercury if she awoke.

Rei Hino was another such choice. Showing clairvoyant talents meant that she was being groomed for a similar role. She would be in the secret police, and she would marry young to someone who could help perpetuate such useful gifts.

Meanwhile,
